Ruin of Stars by Linsey Miller
3.0
I enjoyed the book, but the first part was a little tough to get through. Some of the parts got very information heavy and it was hard for me to fully understand what exactly was happening, but I really enjoyed the end part of the book. It was a great ending to a good duology.

A lot of people said that this book gives them whiplash as it goes from something serious to suddenly something pretty funny. I would have to disagree. The book has plenty of hilarious moments, even ones where I was sending them to my friends, who haven't read the book. But this book also takes pauses for the very serious parts, especially towards the end of the book. I can't tell you how many times I nearly cried while reading this. The book is a lot of fun and it's the perfect spot for someone who love Science-Fictions and Fantasy novels with LGBTQ representation in it. That was also the best part was that nearly everyone (except Kay, that I am aware of) is part of the community. A gay and pansexual main characters, nonbinary, bisexual, gay, and ace, supporting cast? Amazing. A world where being fluid and your sexuality doesn't matter? Where can I sign up?
This book also tackles some heavy topics, such as pollution, extortion (of people and the environment), depleting resources, genocide, and rebellion (esp in the face of capitalism).
Definitely a great, quick read. I cannot WAIT to get my hands on the second book.

I really enjoyed the world building and the lore behind this book. It was a really neat blend of Jewish and Russian lore, mixed with a fantasy setting. I also have yet to read a book with a Jewish MC where the story didn't take place during or post WWII. I was really immersed in the work Novik built and the characters we were presented with. The story was something new and once I was pulled in, I couldn't stop reading. My only issue with the book was how it jumps from perspective to perspective and you are left to use the context clues to figure out whose point of view it is. It wasn't bad in the beginning when you are between the three girls, Wanda, Irina, and Miryem. It's when it then starts to jump between the girls and then Wanda's brothers and occasionally Irina's husband. Maybe if the chapter had started with saying who's POV we were in, I wouldn't have had to worry about being pulled out of the story to figure out who was the speaker in that part. But overall the story was still great and the world building was just amazing. Overall, I would say don't let the POV jumping scare you, and definitely give this book a read.

Oh my God I cannot stop crying. I know it's no surprise how it ends and yet I can't stop crying. I was so invested into their story that the end still managed to rip my heart out. People keep saying there was a lot of filler in the book, but I disagree. The "random" characters who get a chapter or three, all connected to the story and still connected to our boys. Plus it makes sense with the way it ends. Truly adored this book

Absolutely wonderful and just as good as the first one. I really hope that there's a short story or something about Felicity and how the deal played out and her life with Sim.
