The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Agatha Christie

I’m not paying attention as I’d like to with the audiobook. I’d like to try the title again in print someday.

V for Vendetta 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Alan Moore

I quite enjoyed the movie which was basically, to its credit, a tightened-up play-by-play of the graphic novel. However, this rendered the experience of reading the graphic novel afterward plodding and repetitive.

Not a bad book, I'm just not vibing with it. I was more into this really deep, esoteric world-building in middle school.

The characters also seem to swing from deeply spiritual and, again, esoteric language to the phrase "like hell I will" and crude jokes with a jarring lack of transition. There is a way to show irreverent characters that still "fit" in your world. Maybe this language choice makes more sense further in the book or the series, but I'm not really compelled to find out.

Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens: The Divine Feminine in the African Religious Traditions

I’m more interested in reading about Orishas, VooDoo, etc. from an anthropological perspective rather than a religious/spiritual one.
dark mysterious tense slow-paced

Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

The book starts pretty strong, lags a bit in the middle, and definitely picks up towards the end.

Well written, however, a book predominantly about Black women suffering at the hands of Black men is nothing I’m interested in reading about in my free time. I hope that those who need this book, find it.

Truly horrific but beautifully written. Worth a read if you can stomach it.

I really enjoyed the essay at the end of this book that analyzes the works of Sade in relation to their place in the budding gothic horror genre of the late 18th century. It provides a context for his work and leads me to consider that perhaps the more depraved of his publications (like some say about the film The Human Centipede (2010)) truly fit the horror genre precisely because they are horrifying beyond belief.
