Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
5.0
I read all 498 pages in one sitting. I have never had a book capture me so quickly and so powerfully. This is a beautiful story of family, friendship, love and devotion all beautifully spun into a cinematic tale. Tan has an amazing way with words. Her story telling is phenomenal, with profound lines like 'Why would a falcon wish to be a nightingale?'. It was so easy to fall in love with her characters and the love triangle, which I try to steer clear from, was so well done. I fell in love with both Liwei and Wenzhi as the incredible men they both were. And of course, the main character, Xingyin, is relatable, powerful, fierce and everything you hope a true heroine would be. I admired her honor and devotion on her quest to save her mother. I'm looking forward to the continuance of this story and where and who Xingyin's path may lead her.
The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

I expected so much more from this book. After reading The Woman and Cabin 10 I expected to have another page turner. This book was incredibly slow to start and every page I just wanted to put it down or throw it across the room. I've mentioned in my other reviews that I am not one to put a book down but I honestly wish I would have.
I'm really surprised to see so much weakness in female characters coming from a female author. I wanted to beat Isa over the head. The worst part was the ending and the way she treats her husband throughout the book. It was absolutely appalling and her behavior was uncalled for. For me, Isa had no redeeming qualities and once again I wish I had put it down and picked up a better novel instead of wasting time with this piece of work.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

This was the first book I read by Ruth Ware. From the start I was excited to see how the story would unfold. This is unfortunately the only one of her books that I enjoyed. Though her female character appears weak (as they do in her other novels in my opinion) I liked Lo a little bit. I feel this is the only novel that can be compared to Agatha Christie.
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

The story reminds me a lot of The Lying Game (a group of deceitful female friends). This was also a bit slow to start. Unfortunately, this seemed to wrap up pretty quick. Just when things start getting good the story ends. Once again I was disappointed with the women (main character Nora) and how weak they come across. And whiny. The story was an interesting, yet wild, ride and it was ok at best.
I wouldn't recommend it to any of my readers.

The Burning God by R.F. Kuang
5.0
The final chapter to Rin's story was a heartbreaking on. I knew how it would end, there was no other way, but the events leading up to it made it so much harder. Kuang is an incredible story teller. I both loved and hated this book and cried like a baby at the end.
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Rin is such a fascinating character. What a gruesome, action packed, incredible tale following a woman who comes from nothing and everyone around her tries to remind her of that. But Rin is someone and she is special. As her powers started to develop it was like watching a movie. Kuang has a brilliant and cinematic way of writing. I was a struggle to put this book down. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series though, unfortunately, I believe I know how it is going to end. That being said, I know this will be one of my favorites for a long time.
Verity by Colleen Hoover

I read this in four hours. While Hoover's work typically isn't for me, I'm always down for a good page-turning thriller. This went above and beyond my expectations. This book reminded me a lot of Gone Girl where it was twisted and told the story of an even more unpredictable woman. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys dark thrillers. The suspense was spot on!
The ending still has me reeling.
