First, I’d like to thank the author for sending me an ARC of Not The Heir in exchange for an honest review.

I was kind of stuck on how to rate this book, because I do think it had a lot of potential. I know the author is quite young, and I’d love to read any future works she creates.

I didn’t think the book was necessarily bad, I just felt it could have used a lot more development and maturity in the writing style, characters, and plot overall. It was creative and an interesting concept, however it didn’t feel completely ‘finished.’

Wow, this book was fantastic. I already knew the ending but it still managed to deliver a huge emotional punch.

The characters were amazingly developed and the story beautifully written—Not to mention it stayed true to the loving relationship between Achilles and Patroclus (which is often diminished in modern translations of the Iliad).

An incredible story of love, hubris, honour, and war.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a solid read with an interesting plot and characters.

I think maybe it was just overhyped for me. I loved the first book a lot, and everyone said this one would be so amazing and heartbreaking, but it just didn’t pack the huge punch I’d expected.

Helene’s POV was my favourite and I found her character super interesting—though this did sometimes make me want to skim to reach her sections. I liked some minor characters like Harper and Musa pretty well, and thought the idea of the truth-telling Jiin was intriguing.

Laia’s invisibility and Elias’ Waiting Place situation felt a bit underdeveloped/out of place to me (both in this book and Torch) which might just be because the first book seemed much less magic focused. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the Cook reveal, personally.

Overall I thought it was a good book, but I preferred the first in the series. I’ll read the fourth one to see what happens, and maybe it’ll blow me away for the conclusion!
