Incredibly disappointing. The discussions of trans identities is gross, the treatment of the queer men is gross, there’s white savior moments strung throughout…it’s not good! Honestly I’m being generous even giving it 2 stars. The pacing of the writing is just…odd, too fast in some parts but then unbearably slow in others. Ada’s character is boring and passive. Her motivations (if you can even really say she had any) made no sense for anything. Honestly, don’t waste your time with this book. The concept was absolutely fascinating, but the execution just completely fell through.

I was worried I wouldn’t like this book very much, but I actually really enjoyed it. The characters are fascinating to me, specifically Libby, Reina, and Parisia. I want to know every single thing about them and their powers. There’s a second book, yeah? I cannot wait to get my hands on it my god

I would absolutely rate this higher than 5 stars if i could. I think this is my new favorite book of all time. It was genuinely such an enjoyable read and I never wanted it to end. The world feels so rich and beautiful. The whole conversation of “maybe we don’t have a purpose other than to live, and that’s fine” is just….oughhh my god I’m gonna cry. I loved reading this and have no doubt I’ll come back to it again

Started off really slow and it took me a bit to figure out who all the characters were but honestly not bad! it’s not my usual genre at All but I had a good time reading it, finished it in one sitting. I honestly just want to read more about Philippa and Tommy’s domestic life more than anything, I truly did not care about the other weird subplots

I. Honestly don’t know how to feel. Same with the authors other book “the maidens”. Like it was interesting enough to keep me engaged and I wanted to keep reading but something about the way this author writes women just irks me to my core. The story was good though I just wish there was a bit more at the ending there, like a resolution for Alicia.

picked this up despite my disdain for tjr, but it was alright. I’m glad she verged away from the weird like interview format, I hated that part of her other works. The whole time I was just waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop, just like “oh god now. No? Oh? Now…THERES MORE??? oh my god someone’s gonna get hurt” like her choice to use the time stamps (like 3:00 am) at the beginning of chapters was really clever and definitely added to that feeling of dread. I think that was definitely really well done. I was more engaged with this book than her other ones I’ve read, I will say this. Nina and her siblings are FAR more likeable than Daisy Jones or Evelyn Hugo. I won’t be picking up Carrie Soto is Back bc her character does not interest me at all, but Malibu Rising definitely exceeded my (truthfully, low) expectations. Worth the read imo.
