Honestly the set up is incredibly boring, I don’t like any of the characters do far, and it’s just not capturing my attention. I had to force myself to get as far as i did and I just don’t see myself enjoying it so may as well DNF
yeah. Just. Yeah. That was. Really heavy and really fucking good!! Oh my god!! Also this is the first book I’ve read where a character uses neo pronouns and that made me emotional I won’t even lie. Read this book (with caution)
Graphic: Murder, Religious bigotry, War, Cursing, Domestic abuse, Gun violence, Violence, Body horror, Child death, Deadnaming, Death, Death of parent, Genocide, Gore, and Injury/Injury detail
picked this up despite my disdain for tjr, but it was alright. I’m glad she verged away from the weird like interview format, I hated that part of her other works. The whole time I was just waiting with bated breath for the other shoe to drop, just like “oh god now. No? Oh? Now…THERES MORE??? oh my god someone’s gonna get hurt” like her choice to use the time stamps (like 3:00 am) at the beginning of chapters was really clever and definitely added to that feeling of dread. I think that was definitely really well done. I was more engaged with this book than her other ones I’ve read, I will say this. Nina and her siblings are FAR more likeable than Daisy Jones or Evelyn Hugo. I won’t be picking up Carrie Soto is Back bc her character does not interest me at all, but Malibu Rising definitely exceeded my (truthfully, low) expectations. Worth the read imo.
I. Honestly don’t know how to feel. Same with the authors other book “the maidens”. Like it was interesting enough to keep me engaged and I wanted to keep reading but something about the way this author writes women just irks me to my core. The story was good though I just wish there was a bit more at the ending there, like a resolution for Alicia.
