The Corn Grows Ripe by Jean Charlot, Dorothy Rhoads

An intriguing insight into Mexican indigenous life. I particularly liked the style of the illustrations. It made the book that much more immersive.
Puck of Pook's Hill by Rudyard Kipling

A Kipling book that has miraculously aged well! Younger me couldn't really get into it, but now, a couple of years later, I found it quite charming and educational.
Hitty, Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field

Very fun concept, and charming writing. It was a lot more exciting than expected.
Isn't very great when it comes to describing other cultures/people who aren't white. But I guess that makes it a product of its times. Still, I wouldn't let a child read this on their own.

One Boy's War by Ian Benfold Hayward, Lynne Huggins-Cooper
4.5
Probably the book that gave me such an abhorrence of war so early on. Actually horrifying, and the ending is such a gut punch.
The Outlands by Tyler Edwards

Bit of a mixed basket. We never even go to the Outlands :-(
The main character was very annoyingly rash. And then the one time taking action was the right thing to do, he didn't.
I predicted a couple of the plot twists, but the two main ones were a complete surprise. Honestly, those plot twists had me gagged and they're the reason for the high rating.
Concerning the writing: it could have used a little more editing. The writer continually switches between tenses. He uses some sayings wrong. There's also grammar and punctuation issues. Some of the worldbuilding is unclear First it's said the "winners" of the Lottery get to choose their punishment, then it's said the population gets to vote what the punishment will be. Spike's accent is not only irritating, it's also not consistent: in some places he says "da" and "den", in other places he says "the" and "then". The commander's disdain for the Undesirables was soooo unsubtle.

Bloomin' Rainforests (Horrible Geography S.) by Anita Ganeri

Took the whole "teachers are boring" thing a bit far, but a fun and interesting read overall.
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

Definitely couldn't put this down. Not as devastating as everybody says although Ampert was pretty bad and all the cameos felt a bit much. But all in all, a good new installment.
Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes... and How to Correct Them: Lessons from the Life-Changing Science of Behavioral Economics by Gary Belsky, Thomas Gilovich

Not only fun, it adressed a lot of facts about human thinking that I'd considered before.
