Why Me, Mama? is a picture book for school age children and tells the story of Rose a self-conscious owlet who learns we’re all different and that’s okay!
This book is so beautiful; that was the first thing I noticed and as I flipped through the pages I grew to love the illustrations more. There are so many details to look at. My overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For a full review check out my latest blog post!
I honestly did not like this book in the beginning and I think that had a lot to do with the main character as I did not like her to begin with, she is one tough cookie. But as the story continued I was able to enjoy it, I loved the friendships and Karinas growth. I also I loved how the story took the expectations placed on women in Latinx families and turned them around and said no this doesn’t have to be how it is. I’m latinx culture there is a lot of pressure for the women to serve the men and that’s it that is and can only be their biggest accomplishment. Karina challenges those expectations and challenges her friends too! I loved that Karina did that and that she faced her challenges by going to therapy. By the end I loved Karina her rough edges and all she is so strong and I’m happy for her. Lastly I appreciated the overall message that readers and Karina learn, that our choices are our own and we should love and respect one another instead of judging and hating each other. Truly brilliant writing.

Enjoyed reading this coming of age story. It was heartbreaking and uplifting, but by the end I was left feeling like there could’ve been something more.

Loved it would love to read more about Viv and Tandri and their coffee shop. I felt like I was invited into a cozy nook of a book that provided me with the fortune of a peaceful escape that included laughs, light mystery and magic.
