I recommend this book. I am aware of the pure volume of people in my community that have read and relate to this book. That speaks numbers to me.

I adore the characters, the hints towards queerness, and the strangely obvious symbolism. The writing was just -too- obvious; I pieced together "Stay gold Ponyboy" too soon and it sort of spoiled the book a bit.

I believe if I had read this book in 6th grade I would have a much deeper emotional attachment to this book. I want to give Ponyboy a hug.

Firstly, this book has inspired me to read more nonfiction. I have never enjoyed a nonfiction book so much and I am grateful for Alice Cappelle for writing this! Her voice really shines through and I am looking forward to reading this book again someday.

As much as I appreciate the YouTube video recommendations, it feels strange to see so many tertiary sources cited and I felt it weakened some arguments. I feel the majority of this book was evidence and it was missing analysis. If I wasn't already very interested in this subject, I think this would have been a difficult book to read, even with explanations for all of the slang.

Finally, this review is mostly a log for myself. But I would like to say, I hope tremendously that Cappelle keeps writing! (:

There were so many lines in this book that made me laugh because of how the characters all seemed dramatic to a silly extent. I'm a sucker for theatrics.
Like, go girl! Give that fire-breathing dragon some sass like he couldn't burn you up in seconds! And the codependency plot? Don't get me started.
I really appreciated the crazy tension and the understandable fight scenes.

I would easily recommend this play. Every character was deeply thought-provoking and the story itself makes me wonder if Shakespeare was a feminist.

I absolutely adore these characters, and the last page,, MY HEART.
Something was just, off? The descriptions were just as flowery and gorgeous. But the language was odd. And I -know- this was made in a different era, still, I was very uncomfortable with the strange messages about punishing children.
I'm sorry to say I just really wanted more Gilbert and less Davy + Dora.

It's giving white saviorism.

And the poetry was lacking.
However! I found it to be a powerful perspective, harrowing, and a real call to action.

I adore this story! A sweet nostalgic atmosphere. 10 year old me would have clung to this book.
