i'll give it to cassandra clare, she's really good at interlacing her other series so that they're all deeply connected, no matter the time period, and you feel it whilst reading it, all those little references to other past-times turned me into a grieving widow immediately

and the same for introducing new characters??? i want to read and know their all stories ASAP (it is a required skill)

I bought this for a flight home, started to read it as the plane was delayed and quickly realised, I could not, in fact, read this in an airport with so many people around due to the BUCKET OF TEARS that welled up and out of me at one story..

I read this many many months later (in a place I could safely cry) and its now one of my favourite reads, rivers shed, eyes all blubbed out, soul CRUSHED, but would happily read it all again

I loved it so so so so so much

I liked this book up until the 50% mark, it started strong and brought so much depth into the characters as individuals, but as soon as the two characters were on page together, pieces that made the characters (for me) fell too far into the background and all the moments that i thought would matter, didn't?

it just felt like the first and second half were two different books, and i grew frustrated reading it, which makes me sad bc i loved LOVED the first half

look, the writing was fine and improved immensely, HOWEVERR, the choices made for plot & character progression were awful (and very lacking in their best potential, i feel)

a little heads up (if you're like me and jump right over the edge when cliffhangers show up), the third instalment doesn't pick up right where the second one leaves us, we get taken back in time a little bit—and oh boy, how glad we are to have been given more time with damian and lani, i want to reread the whole thing again, from book 1 to book 3, with everything fresh in mind because they are so good and sweet,, i miss them already

i love love love how seamlessly written the bonds of these characters and their friendships are, the found family keeps persevering, and they're still strongly one of my favourites

THE ENDING WAS SO FFING CUUUUTE
i shall forever wait for the next journey 🥹🫶
