5th/6th Grace book club book: Our highest rated book yet!! I absolutely loved this story and the whole cast of characters! It was cute and fun and devastatingly sad. An easy 5 stars!
This book was so touching and will stay with me for a long time! Coyote and her dad are traveling around in a school bus they converted into a home. They’ve run away from the painful experience of losing her mom and sisters in a car accident. Now Coyote has to trick her dad into taking her back. They meet and pick up several people along the way. The story in incredible and I couldn’t put it down. This will be my next read aloud for my middle grades. Fantastic!
Very cute YA for a young reader about a girl and her complicated relationship with her dad.
Five years is a long time to not go home. It’s also a long time to avoid the topic that pains both Coyote and her dad Rodeo.
But when spunky Coyote learns the park she holds dear is set for demolition, she’ll have to face five years of grief. On her journey from Florida to Washington State, Coyote faces the true meaning of life after loss, and the friends that help along the way.
Such a heartfelt and warm story. It did bother me as a whole that the story never touches the crazy that is Rodeo’s decision to drag his daughter across the country to avoid grief but it also is a very raw look at the undeniable pain grief causes. So I recommend this as a plan for parents handling grief, no. Do I think the extreme idea makes a great story? Absolutely.

With a cast of unforgettable characters and a setting as unique as the story itself, this book will tug at your heartstrings and remind you that no matter how far you go, you can’t outrun your past—but you can learn to carry it with you.

For myself, it's a five star book. For my students, I'd say it's a 3.5. This book represents a category I'm getting more and more aware of - books written for children that adults want them to like. However, it probably misses the mark for most of my middle school students. There are probably a few girls who are avid readers that would like this book a whole lot, though.
3.75 maybe? it was an ok story. it tried to tackle a lot but doesn’t go too in depth on any of it. pacing could’ve been better
