This was a good African-American historical romance although the plot felt quite familiar and predictable, not just from Jenkins' other books but from other romance novels as well. About the same level as Jenkins' Jewel, better than Wild Sweet Love.

This story was beautiful. Chase and Cara both come from terrible backgrounds but have found ways to flourish in their adult lives.

Cara, being a college educated woman, is well known in the community and is respected as the primary school teacher. Chase is an sergeant on the Tenth Calvary and is a very well respected officer.

I loved their relationship. Cara was full of sass and knew what she wanted. Chase was funny and easy going. They complimented each other so well. It was a joy to read about their love story.

I also really enjoyed the history lesson you learn while reading this book. It was interesting to learn more about Kansas Fever, also known as the "Great Exodus". Even though it was heart breaking to read about at times, this story is full of hope, loyalty, friendship and love. It was absolutely fabulous.

All that I am going to say is that this story did my historical romance heart good. Exactly what I wanted and Beverly Jenkins gave it to me.

A little boring but I appreciate a feminist heroine in 1994.

Another incredible blend of Black history in Kansas and romance. Jenkins is an amazing writer. Her characters are so alive and the historical info feels organic and important.
I read this for a readalong but I can’t remember which one. Some of the Indigenous treatment doesn’t work anymore, but I imagine they were progressive for the genre at the time.

This was really good. The prologue was rough, and I really struggled to get through the description of her grandfather's murder. Beverly Jenkins did a really good job of giving historical context to this story. I loved the chemistry between Cara and Chase. I love how into each other they were! I really enjoyed the plot, however it got a little slow at the end, which I didn't enjoy as much, which is why it was brought down a star. I also enjoy the slightly slower fluffier romances, so this got a bit exciting for me at the end.
