extremely long. this also felt extremely repetitive at times, especially when it came to physical descriptions of characters.
the writing was interesting, or at least it was trying to be but not often succeeding lol..i did not hate it, enjoyed some metaphors and even some of the many many many comparisons, but it overall felt a bit heavy

we see the world through ophélie’s eyes except she’s boring and she’s not helped bu the plot which is pretty slow moving (400 pages before the events started piquing my interest). now i’m all for a character driven novel, they’re probably my favorites, but the characters need to give us SOMETHING! here i got close to nothing, except from some side characters.

on top of that the one sided ‘’romance’’ came out of nowhere? the lack of development can make sense given the fact that we are in Ophélie’s head and that she feels nothing for him but the way in which she convinced herself he was deeply in love with her after that one interaction is kind of ridiculous.

never say never but i don’t think i’ll keep reading this series, the ending didn’t really hook me but who knows?

THIS BOOK IS A HELL OF A SLOW BURN AND I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE MISS THE POINT OF THE BOOK. IT HONESTLY REALLY GOOD, JUST REALLY LONG, DEFINITELY SETS UP FOR THE SEQUEL.

This story isn’t a romance first. Say what you may, I fully believe that even though this book was set up for an eventual love interest, that is not the main point of the book.

At this books very core, it’s about self growth and not loosing yourself from trauma in a world that does not care about who you are.

The main character is in-fact a very quiet woman when in her comfort has no care for growth or change. Though when forced to enter a world that is not only new to her, but cruel to her - she is forced realize that even those who are said to be trusted are not.

If we’re to describe the main premise, our heroine isn’t a heroine but a survivor in this book. She is a woman who lacks confidence but at her very core knows who she is, while those around her have confidence but have lost themselves to the fake world that consumes them.

Without spoiling this book I’d say that this book definitely takes its time. The main character is a bit quiet and bland. (She is and it’s okay. It’s not like super poor in taste or anything. Just something that’s stated somewhat often.)

It’s was pretty good until I noticed that it feels as thought the book starts out pretty exciting and then it seems to drag on for a bit then starts back up on being exciting only to go back to dragging on again.

I think this a good book if you’re wanting an escapism in a cool little world. It’s full of themes like musical elegant hallways full of chatty and flirty Victorian girls. And what happens if you combined white powdered wigs, victorian clothes and what i imagine crazy celebrities party’s are like. Basically nobles decked out in wigs and full makeup all attending a never ending party.

Anyways, good book. I would recommend.

This French adaptation left me a little star struck- I expected it to feel like a typical YA, with an organised marriage trope I was expecting it to potentially border on cringe. Instead I was charmed and delighted by the beautiful world building it the different arks I loved Ophelias passivity as a protagonist she finds strength in her quiet and resists in a subtle almost invisible manner proving her to be extraordinarily resilient! I kind of wish I’d  read these as a child but I don’t think that hindered my enjoyment as an adult.

My first impression of this book was how amazing the world building was. I always knew I'd love the setting this book was put in and really loved if more books had this kind of steampunk whole ark setting going on. I loveeed Ophelia but also not. It's difficult to hate of love the characters. I want to say they're complex in their own way but I think that won't be enough.

Thorn was cute but I felt like he wasn't shown enough in this book although I anticipate he'll make more of an appearance in the latter books.

I usually never read slow burn of anything! But this got me really going. The book's easy to read and I could simply read huge portions through one setting. However, the plot is quite slow in unravelling itself. I guess the series really takes it's time and is more of a calm slow read which actually is refreshing.

The magic system here was definitely interesting. Something I never really read before but I'd say it wasn't too complex! Instead it kinda added to whole atmosphere of the book. Ngl I definitely enjoyed this book despite how slow paced it was and am definitely reading the next books. <3

The hatred toward the mc is uncalled for, I enjoyed her journey to find her place in this world. She brings variation into the middle school phantasy genre, which nowadays follows a very specific archetype when it comes to fem mcs (agreeability, timidness,... which she obv represents in the beginning!)

Ngl I'm the child of thorns and ophelia's worst qualities

The rating is probably closer to 3 3/4 due to the typical French attitude towards fatness, ugliness and womanhood
