Brynne Weaver’s Leather & Lark is the second book in her Ruinous Love Trilogy. Much like the first in this series, there were certainly some dramatic and traumatic moments, SO PLEASE READ THE TRIGGER WARNING LIST FIRST. Brynne Weaver is NOT being dramatic when she says she’s going to ruin things, but I do think she ruined pizza far less than she ruined cookies and cream ice cream (iykyk). I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the way it overlapped with the first one, but not in a repetitive way in the slightest. It made quick mention of events that were occurring and filled in some gaps, but by and large was its own unique story with little sprinkles of the past (Rowan and Sloan) and what was to come (Fionn and Rose). I really adored the characters and the way they interacted with one another. Admittedly I did find the slow burn here to be a tad too slow, but not slow enough to frustrate me too much. Overall, this is a spectacular sequel, and I can’t wait to dive into the third installment!

I’m committed to finishing this series because I need to get to Rose’s book — she's the real MVP in my eyes. As for Lachlan and Lark, I had mixed feelings. Lachlan was a bit too broody and emotionally closed off, and the Lark felt a little all over the place — her mood swings made it hard to connect with her. The plot itself was pretty predictable, and I was really hoping for more suspense or a twist to shake things up. It wasn’t a terrible read, just not one that will be memorable.

Just like book 1: Was it absolutely ridiculous? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Also yes.

“Bravery has nothing to do with not feeling fear, and everything to do with facing it.”

I know a lot of people didn’t enjoy this one as much as Butcher & Blackbird - but honestly, I had just as much fun with Lachlan and Lark as I did with Rowan and Sloane.

I think the main place where the narrative falls behind its predecessor is the pacing. There is a good portion of this book that feels like it almost ignores the central threat of the narrative. Yes, we are getting those great romance moments - but it almost felt like the characters and the book itself forgot the looming threat that caused the very plot to kick up in the first place.

But that aside, I had a lot of fun with this book. I love the humour and ridiculousness that Brynne Weaver infuses all her characters with. These larger than life killers with their intricacies. It may not be as bloody and action packed as Butcher & Blackbird - but it is still has that same balance of a fun dark comedy mixed with a dark romance. And all the Brynne Weaver fix’ins like ruining foods, an insane list of trigger warnings at the top of the book, and killers falling in love.

So if you’re looking for a book full of dubious crafts, Irish swearing, Keanu Reeves references, and badass old women (love you Ethel - you absolute icon) all wrapped up in one messy marriage of (in)convience - this is the book for you.

I have a bit of mixed feelings about this one. On one hand I think I like Lark and Lachlan’s love story more than Sloane and Rowan’s but I also think I liked B&B’s action more than L&L. Like I just basically felt like there wasn’t a lot happening here - just a crazy dude threatening everyone on the periphery. BUT I loved the love story and the spice soooooo much - the banter made me kick my feet and giggle. And I loved that Lark ended up being a permanent deleter of bad men. That was so fun. And Sloane and Rowan telling Lachlan that they were afraid of Lark was super cute.
I’m excited to start Scythe and Sparrow but nervous cause how could it possibly hold up?

It was really good, but not as good as the first one. The pacing of the romance was just a bit off - too slow, then everything all at once.

Read all 3 books in a tandem order, and honestly I think that’s why I enjoyed the stories so much more. Had I read them individually I’d feel like I was missing more of the story.

Ass hat is just a big ole softy. Their chemistry and banter was hot. Villain was lack luster and kinda boring, really easily figured out who he was from the ending of B&B. Ethel and Bentley really stole the show. 🤭
