Ah, Winspear had me at the epigram--a Wilfred Owen poem and a mention of Craiglockhart Hospital. There simply cannot be too many novels set in post-WWI Britain for my tastes. How did I miss this series for 15 books?! The writing is a little stilted, which I'm hoping will improve as the series continues, but even still, this was an enjoyable read (and bonus points for being appropriate historical fiction for teens).

An enjoyable book and a novel I would force into the hands of young female readers. Maisie is wonderful protagonist and could be a role model for many.

From a critical standpoint, the book sets the scene and gathers momentum nicely, but suffers from the 100+ page flashback to Dobbs as a child and college student. The flashback moved slower than the main section, and by the time we jump back into the present day story momentum has dissipated.

The series has potential, flashes of a female Sherlock Holmes - I will continue to read and strongly recommend to younger readers.

Really enjoyable read. Part historical fiction part mystery with a lead character that is wonderfully likable and fresh.

I loved this book. I don't read much mystery. Maisie Dobbs is a great start to a twelve book series. the book is more of historical fiction book . I cant wait to read the next one called Birds of a feather .

This book was heartwarming yet tragic. What soldiers from the Great War suffered in mind and body is unimaginable and this book brings it to light in a respectful and meaningful way. The way in which the author, Jacqueline Winspear, wove the events together with the lives of the characters was masterful.

I really enjoyed this. The backstory in the middle was a little strange but still enjoyable. I look forward to reading more

A great cozy series set in the post WWI world of London!
