I enjoyed this but didn’t love it.

SpoilerAnna and Charles go hunting a rouge wolf in the snowy mountains but it ends up being a witch. I think I would have loved them not getting together so quickly so there was slightly more courting and tension.

Charles and Anna are so cute!! I love them!

I’ve been in a bit of a book slump.  I’ve been so caught up in what is going on in the world that it is really hard to find anything else that can hold my interest for even just a little while.  This is the worst it has ever been for me.  My solution was to take an author I have really loved and read another series written by them.  I am all up to date on the Mercy Thompson series, thanks to the Read-along last year, but I’d not read the side series in the same world Alpha & OmegaCry Wolf is the first book of that series set directly after Moon Called the first book of the Mercy Thompson series.

I know some about Charles from the other series.  He is portrayed by Mercy as scary, well at least to her and Bran’s enemies.  The story starts with Anna having just been rescued from an abusive pack by Charles.  Their wolves recognize a connection right away and connect as mates immediately, a little backwards to the regular way things are done.  Anna is coming back to Montana with Charles and Bran as they figure things out.

Anna is so easy to like.  She has been through hell with her pack, being forced into becoming a wolf and then abused.  She is a strong woman and an Omega (they are able to sooth the wolves in others) but that kind of abuse leaves some pretty big emotional scars for her to work through.  Good thing there is a possible rogue wolf in the mountains and Charles and Anna will go together in order to find the wolf and see if they can save him.

I really enjoyed Cry Wolf, I might even like the characters more than its side series.  Charles and Anna are a really good fit together, both are strong and vulnerable in their own ways.  Charles as Bran’s enforcer is feared by many.  He is worried that Anna seeing him kill others will fear him too.  I loved getting some back story on both Bran and Samuel that we didn’t see in the Mercy Thompson series.  The characters in this series really open up more discovery of the past and how greater wolf politics work along with some of the dangers in the world.

What a great side series, I was engaged the whole time and was able to relax out of the world’s happenings, which was really what I was going for.  This was a good way to start my reading slump recovery.

Narration:

Holter Graham has a truly enchanting voice that fit Charles really well.  He performed the story so well and made it easy to connect with all the characters.  I listened to this at my usual 1.5x speed.

I feel like I am missing the start of the story, but barely since she recaps a couple times and I didn't know about the short story prequel ahead of time. despite that I still love the mercy thompson universe and this was a nice addition. I always wondered what was going on everywhere else while mercy was dealing with supernatural forces and now I know lol. good fun read

Anyone else have a random reading pet peeve that you just can't get past? Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega series came highly recommended. It's an offshoot of another series and starts with a great novella, that wet my appetite and pushed me to continue.

Cry Wolf the first full-length novel in the series was great, no arguments there and I'm happy I read it. The universe, the characters, the lore got me so excited... until I realized this series is 6 books long and it revolves around a single couple.

I CANNOT stand more than 2 books about the same couple (and even that is pushing it). If I'm reading a romance series I need the couple to resolve the issues they have in two books and live Happily Ever After. If a world is still worth exploring a new couple needs to be introduced. I can't stand manufactured dramas or external issues that basically drag couples through hell for several books, or worse a couple so I'll matched that it takes 3 or more books to figure their shit out. Its kinda sad but I can't see myself continuing this though the writing was wonderful and the universe quite intricate and well built

This, this is amazing.

I really really enjoyed it. You should totally read the novella before reading this! (if you don't you loose a lot of backstory like how they meet and what happened to Anna)

Finally we get to see Charles and Bran a little bit more. I really enjoyed his character. Bran is really interesting and I almost wish we got to read his story with Charles' mother and afterwards with Leah. And the time before it too! When is mother was alive!

Anna's character is really good too. She's getting to know herself, and I hope she keeps growing.

To be honest I enjoyed reading this more than some books of Mercy's series. And that is my favorite urban fantasy series, so...

Three and 1/2 stars actually. I like the Mercy Thompson series better, but this was still an enjoyable read. You learn more about Bran, who is a major figure in both series. I like that the book switched narrators as well. You get an idea how several characters are thinking, where with the Mercy Thompson series, its all through Mercy's eyes and character dialog. If you like the Mercy series, give this one a shot too.
