A powerful story that makes you think. What consequences do my actions have? What does it mean to be a good person? What unites us as humans who come from different faiths and nationalities?

Nice to read about WW1 instead of WW2 for a change. Ending was cheesy, but overall I liked the five different perspectives.

Nielsen does it again. Gives a human perspective to times that are so unfamiliar to most readers. What made this one more engaging was how she incorporated what I can only describe as the butterfly effect: one person’s actions impacts another who in turn impacts another. Shows how connect we really are.

Well done historical fiction. I really appreciated the endnotes explaining why the author decided to present WW1 through the perspective of five people instead of just one... personally I don't like that method of storytelling, but it did make sense in this case. The storyline and the endnotes gave a pretty good overview for WW1, making this book an excellent supplement to studying this time period.

I loved the story being told by alternating characters. I felt the final connection was too pretty of a wrap-up.

Excellent book! Perfect for middle grade students and adults alike. Humanizes the people from the opposing sides of the war. Age appropriate while also not ignoring the realities of imprisoned parents, starvation, and loss of life. Using as a free read for the historical period of 1900-present.

I bought Lines of Courage because it was at a great price at the book fair and it sounded interesting. I read it with my 9 year old daughter and she as shocked that she liked it after we read the first couple of chapters. Historical fiction, or history period, was a new genre for her. This takes us through the lives of 5 children/teens from very different places during WWI and how their lives will intertwine. My daughter and I were hooked. We were on edge, happy, scared, sad, excited…all the emotions that the characters go through. When we thought we knew what was happening, there was a great twist so the book wasn’t as predictable as it seemed. She was very disappointed that the story was over. Ok, I was too!
