If you take out the romance I think this book would have been a lot better. The romance was almost non existent and when it was happening it didn’t feel natural. There was lots of unsaid things that you had to infer. And just overall a lot going on. The angst between the lovers was just annoying and dragged on far too long.

I loved the world building and the actual plot which is why I went with 3 stars. The story was very interesting and I loved how magic was used in the story. I also loved the friendship of the group. They all were very different and each brought something unique to the table.

Altair had by far the best storyline. The things we learn about him as the story goes on just really suck you in. I loved his wittiness and how honest he was.

Lastly the ending felt rushed with Zafira and Nasir. He had offered her everything and she turned him down only to change her mind And boom the story is over. There was so much potential for them!!! They got married and we didn’t even get to read about it? Laa!!!!!!!!!!!!

BookClub: Me, Myself & I *
Month: February, 2024
Theme: Read a Book from a Finished Series
* BookClub Me, Myself & I is just a "book club" where I pick up a prompt each month and I have to "force" myself to read a book that fits that prompt.

-------------------------------------------------------

Altair is never beating the best character in this duology allegations.

Synopsis:

The story continues as Zafira and Nasir attempt to end the plan the evil plan of the Lion of the Night, preventing his return.

However, their efforts are challenged by a chain of events, betrayal, love and self-interests. Can Zafira, Nasir and their zumra be strong enough to fight through all of it and finally bring peace to their lands?

Review:

The atmosphere and setting (world-building) is one of the things I most love about this world. As someone who is fascinated with the Middle Eastern atmosphere, history and culture, I absolutely fall in love with any book that deals really well with such setting. The reader could immerse in the words, imagine themselves in that specific time and place.

The plot, as in We Hunt The Flame , is well constructed and it is definitely one of the best aspects of the book. An interesting plot is definitely the strength of this author.

However, as the first book, the romance dragged and, therefore, the plot dragged and the book seemed to never end. Never seemed to get to the point.

The author sold this series as a slow burn but it is an unnecessary slow burn. There is no need for the author to constantly pull and bring the couple together solemnly because they can’t/won’t communicate.

Slow burn is not this. It is not the will they or won’t they? because the characters do not dare to actually communicate or explain themselves. It is as if they want the other to read their minds, particularly Zafira. The amount of times she pushed away from Nasir solemnly because she misinterpreted something or did not dare to actually ask him for an explanation is w i l d .

This book focused so much on dragging out the romance that the zumra , the family they constructed, was left for fifth plan. It would’ve been more enjoyable to see more evidences of found family.

Altair, you are perfect. Never change.

Overall, it was amazing aside from the dragged out romance.

4 stars!

I still have quite a few questions that went unanswered but overall this was an amazing sequel with plenty of twists and turns and action and scary moments.

Also, Nasir and Zafira own my heart.

I'm left in shambles??!!!?!

Felt contradictory. Like there would be a stated rule or circumstance and then an immediate, random "but wait!" where it changed for some reason that didn't feel validated but more a way to move the plot along through structured tropes or bait for the readers. While still written with beautiful phrases and wording throughout, it lacked the compelling storyline and earned surprises of the first book. Any character growth felt artificial and underdeveloped. I wanted to know what happened, but from chapter 1 it felt very much like a chore, and I rarely felt engaged in the reading experience.

Wow. I absolutely loved both We Hunt the Flame and We Free the Stars. I almost stopped reading before the end of We Free the Stars as I didn’t want to leave Arawiya quite yet.

This is a slower read but for all the right reasons. Hafsah Faizal painted vibrant imagines of the land, its people and the relationships between Zafira and her found family.

I hope to one day return to Arawiya.
