Such a rich book. It has beautiful Nordic inspired illustrations and tales from around the world. The stories are folktales with the usual fairy tale elements of magical objects and talking animals. But they are so much more. There are wonderful lessons of generosity and friendship.
They warmed my heart. (Something great for a cold winter's evening.). My favorite was "Tanuki's Gold", a story about compassion and sharing, and "The Rabbit's Gift", a story showing the circle of giving that often comes from a single act of generosity.
There are repeated themes of the rewards of humbly caring for animals and plants in stories like "The Apple Tree Man" and "The Mother of the Sea".
These stories will stay with me!

This collection contains fairy tales from all over the world, from Western classics like The Snow Queen and The Nut Cracker to tales that were unfamiliar to me such as Tanuki's Gold (Japan), The Poinsettia (Mexico), and The Children and the Sun (Southern Africa). I loved discovering those lesser known ones the most and I appreciate how careful the author treated tales by indigenous cultures (she tried to obtain permission for publishing her versions and donates part of the profits to Survival International). What truly makes this book shine though are the stunning illustrations by Zanna Goldhawk. Beautiful and sweet, with many things to discover, and a gorgeous color palette that fits the winter mood perfectly.

'Here,' said the Snow Queen, holding open her snow-white cloak. 'Come closer.' Climbing onto herwhite cushioned seat and leaning into her furs felt like sinking into a snowdrift. The Snow Queen kissed Kay's brow once and he was numb. He no longer felt the cold. In fact, he felt nothing at all. The Snow Queen kissed him twice, and he forgot Gerda, he forgot home, he forgot everything.'

The most beautiful fairy tale book ever created! Polar fantasy is my new favorite genre!
