Difficult protagonist
I liked the plot but disliked the main character. I kept reading to find out who the zookeeper was and was shocked.

WOW.....i'll be in a state of WTF for awhile after that!
Re-reading this, a couple years later. I wandered whether or not I would be impacted differently.
I think I might have evolved just enough that the sadness of this book touched me so deeply.
In contrast to the first go around, it was very deep, and I ran from the feelings. I felt sad, and left it at that.
This time around I am enchanted, I have such appreciation for these words.
So much feelings, so much weight, so much everything.

What a total M!ndFck!! It was captivating and dark. I still have some questions - but feel like the end is fitting.
Toch gewoon 4 sterren waard. Dus geen spijt van :-)

Mud Vein is the first and only book I've read from Tarryn Fisher, but I won't stop there. I've read it years ago but I still think of it from time to time. Some sentences stuck to me deeply. It was also an introduction to one of my favorite artist Danny O'Connor whose art I own. On top of that, it contained music by Florence. What a divine combination.
"When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken. If she wants her freedom, she has to take a close look at her past. But, her past has a heartbeat... and her kidnapper is nowhere to be found. With her survival hanging by a thread, Senna soon realizes this is a game. A dangerous one. Only the truth can set her free."
Mud Vein is categorizes as dark romance, but I don't remember much of love. I remember the survivalist thriller that grips you by the throat and looks you in the eyes as you choke. All consuming dread in which intellect and brilliance of characters shines while they fail by their own demons.
“You are a lot uglier than you think, plenty more selfish than you are ever likely to admit. So, you ignore what’s inside of you. Thinking if you don’t acknowledge it, it’s not really there. Until someone unlikely comes along and cracks you. They see every dark corner, and they get it. And they tell you it’s okay to have dark corners, instead of making you feel ashamed of them.”
Notion that people can be so good but still have one single bad string inside them is forever stuck in my head. It resonated with me, connected to my mud vein and made me embrace it.
I did not like the revelation at the end, the reason for it all but it still gave me a nice journey through inner and outer horrors.

So far, this is my least favourite book of Tarryn's which I wasn't expecting as the blurb was honestly exactly what I was after. I went into this book thinking it was one thing but it was something completely different.
I thought, for the most part, the book moved at a steady pace but I will say, the beginning and the end were the slowest parts of the book. I was confused through a lot of the book and now I've finished it, I'm still not 100% sure I understand what happened.
I really liked Isaac which is probably why I kept reading this one and Senna was honestly an unlikeable character. She was neurotic and didn't make logical choices but considering what she has gone through, I could understand to an extent. But there was something before anything even happened that I didn't like about her.
I think the second part of this book was the best and we got some answers that the reader desperately needed for this book to make any sense.
I'm not really sure how else to review this book because I don't really know what it was about. This book did have it's strengths - the writing, the character development, the middle section, but overall it felt chaotic and definitely isn't a favourite of Tarryn's.

When I first read this book several years ago, it took me by surprise. I never knew that I could be “seen” so well by a book and have aspects of myself described in such a way that I have never been able to put into words myself. Since this is such a personal book to me, I won’t elaborate too much. But I will say this is one of my favorite books of all time and one of my favorites of Tarryn Fisher’s books. As I have said before, she is a genius of emotional prose and getting into the depth of a character/person. While I can see how this may not be a book for everyone, those who it is for will find it, and will understand exactly what I mean. I will forever love this one!

“Love doesn’t leave. It bears all things” - Mud Vein
Oof. Well that hurt.
This book wasn’t really what I was expecting. I was expecting a story about a woman who had been captured by someone and was working against them to release her, perhaps more thriller-like and bloody? While some of those were in the book, this book instead was about love, relationships, facing inner demons, trauma, life and death, strength, and the power of human connection. All while a woman was trapped in a desolate cabin in the snow.
I loved this book. It brought me to tears at several points and it also made me feel love at some points. The characters in this book were very mysterious, but well thought out and complex. Even at the end of the story, there is much to wonder about as not everything is explained. The ending of the book was also devastatingly beautiful. I was definitely rooting for a different ending, one that to me would have been “happier” maybe, but this ending did ultimately fit the book. I can’t get enough of books like these and even just sitting here writing this review I can’t get it off of my mind. This is the first book that I have read by Tarryn Fisher and I will definitely be back for more.
