This book was so good! This is a series where the world building actually gets better with each book rather than more confusing (FBAA

I love this series and the fourth book may be my favourite so far. The characters continue to get more and more developed as the series continues and it tied up a lot of strands from the plot of books 2&3. This book was much longer than the previous three, but it didn’t drag. I sometimes found it hard to switch between the states of consciousness, you’d get amazing scenes then cut to the dreamscape which was sometimes frustrating but ultimately worth it for the plot. KJ Sutton’s world has taken shape so vividly and I’m very excited (and a little scared) for the next book. I see a lot of people saying this reminds them of ACOTAR and then get hateful, it’s not at all like that series. The plot and timing is much quicker, character development will take longer and most characters are morally grey at best. The first book has some similar themes but after that there is a huge divergence.

DNF at 58%. Loved the first half (minus the weird ass Oliver storyline). And then everything I’ve hated about the other books came smacking me in the face. This series really had potential but it’s just not good. I can’t do it anymore even though I love Laurie.

I love this series.
Fortuna is a strong FMC who continues to grow throughout this series as she is faced with difficult decisions. Any book that has strong side characters but don't overshadow the main characters is not so easily done but KJ Sutton does that in this series. This book was a big one, but I just couldn't put it down and loved every minute of it not to mention all the questions I still don't have answers for but enjoy coming up with a theory and can't wait to see if they pan out in book 5. I know the love interest is a big one in this series, but I just hope it doesn't turn into a "why choose let me have both" I actually want her to choose one of the hot fae princes.

I love Fortuna, Laurie, Collith, and Oliver. I love Fortuna’s entire band of misfits, actually. I love this fresh take on the world of faerie, and it has been so fun watching Fortuna navigate it as she journeys through self-discovery. I’m so glad to have another installment of her story!

But, listen: this book is an absolute beast. I understand why the author needed to push the release date back — I would’ve actually supported more time and another big round of edits. Some scenes felt overwritten and dragged down the pacing, while a couple of critical scenes felt UNDERwritten and, consequently, lacked clarity. Continuity errors popped up, a couple of sentence fragments snuck in there that were left unresolved… it was a lot.

If I pull back and look at the plot points and the characterization, it’s still a great story. That’s ultimately why it still earns 4 stars for me. It’s still immersive, inventive, engaging, and everything I want out of this genre. Writing is hard. I think the author just needed a more aggressive editor in her corner, and it could’ve been that much better. I’m still a Fortuna fan and can’t wait to see where her next book will take her!

can i just say i really really love the way trauma and memory are depicted in this book?? the scenes in the dreamscape where they fight literal monsters as manifestations of her defense mechanisms in order to uncover fortuna's repressed memories are so good, and every character's healing process from their individual traumas (and how coming together as a family plays such a large role in that) is so precious to me. i want them all to be happy and okay but i don't think the last 2 books of this series will be very kind to them :(
