To be reread, after I do some of the work mentioned in it. Until then, highly recommended.
Because I don't have time to go to therapy, but I want to do better by my children. HTDTW walks you through identifying where your childhood trauma lives, how to name your emotions and walk them back to that trauma, and then how to reparent your inner child. Can't recommend this enough if you're looking for practical steps to take each day to help grow as a person and to become fully actualized and present.
the only reason i added another star is because i feel like this book MIGHT have been helpful to 6th grade me. when i was first getting into psychology. maybe if it my first ever psychology book. beyond that, very unhelpful. don’t waste your breath, your time, or your years with functioning eyesight.
it added 0 knowledge to my life. every chapter felt like it could have been an instagram post, which it probably was. and also brother why are you talking about instagram so much in a psychology book?? girl needs to read a couple more psychology books and do a psychology major and then maybe revisit. her writing was also childish. it didn’t feel mature or academic. it felt like we were on a zoom call and she was just talking to me casually about a couple psychology things she discovered. not what i wanted, not what it claimed to be.
anyways, i learned absolutely nothing. im glad it helped some people, i wasn’t one of them though.

I enjoyed this book and felt I resonated with a lot of it but was put off by her consistent use of BIPOC as an example for pointing out systems of oppression considering she doesn’t belong to that group, it felt disjointed and like an afterthought (also what about other minorities?). Having said that, I feel better about my breakup after reading this book.
One of the best, if not THE best self-help book I have ever read - combines theory, practise and personal experience in a perfect balance. Lots of scientific knowledge as well as personal wisdom, and unlike some, the body of the book isn't plagued with studies and references, but plenty of resources are there at the back if you want them. In my opinion a great read for anyone, no matter what you are looking for, there is always something to learn, and this one felt flexible and relaxed, so you can take whatever resonates from it, I highly recommend it.

Just not for me (right now). Also didn't vibe with the narrator.
