Not altogether bad, but it does ramble on much longer than necessary. The story is pretty good, but there are at least two opportunities for it to reach a satisfying ending long before the actual end. This does a pretty nice job of illustrating why other books end when they do instead of giving you every detail about what happens to the characters later.

Well this was a very long book. Far superior to the terrible movie. This was actually a pretty good science fiction story with a huge rich multi universe world. The main bad guy was sneaky and interesting. The main good guy was too good and I really disliked him!
The biggest complaint, and why I cant give this five stars is because the technical aspects of the story were so damn boring! I know it's important to the plot how a Psychlo circuit works, but I don't want to know. I don't want three pages of how the main character hides spy cameras. Just say he did and move on.
This is an epic work. Worth reading if you like the golden era style science fiction. Definitely incredibly better than the movie which seems to be related to this book in name and vague plot only.

There's a lot of mixed reviews on this book, but I thought it was great. It's nothing that will change your world view and it isn't filled with deep insights, but it is a really fun and exciting Sci-Fi adventure.

And I'm pretty sure you won't get secretly converted to Scientology by reading it.

This is by far my favorite L. Ron Hubbard book.

DNFed for now. Not sure if it’s the writing or if I’m just not in the mood, but I’m giving up for now.

This was a great sci-fi story that completely wore out it's welcome. It just went on and on and on. I think the book ended about 4 different times. Each time, I thought it was over, but no, it just kept going. So, I really liked the first 25%, enjoyed the next 25%, and was really done by the end. Great story, though.

If you enjoy Mary Sue protagonists, convenient plot devices, bad science, and high page counts this is the book for you.

It's like Hubbard had thousands of ideas and needed to include all of them, even to the detriment of the book. This starts as pulp fun and closes with you begging for it to just end.

Mr Hubbard should have continued writing Sci-Fi books as his imagination is great!! (even before the nuts-cult). The story has a sort of a Mad-Max meets Blixt Gordon kind of feeling, with some really interesting memes on space faring society's perspective on things. I agree that Galaxy bankers probably will be our first contact. A good read!

This is one of the very few books I DNF'd. Normally I simply continue reading until the end, even if I am not enjoying the book. This particular novel managed, somehow, to anger me with the introduction alone. With a bitter taste in my mouth and not enjoying the first chapter at all, I decided to set this one aside. I just can't read over a thousand pages of a book I simply don't like.

It's a shame, really. There is a lot of extra things in the back of the book, notes from the author and such. For fans this is an absolutely wonderful edition. Perhaps I'll try to read it once more in a few years or so. But, for now, its going to remain a DNF.

Not as bad as it's reputation, but not as good as any of the 'Mission Earth' series either.
