It was interesting how the story was told by several different narrations and the events weren't in chronilogical order at all. It jumped all over the place. But it still worked. Really enjoyed it.

I struggled through this book. It made me quite uncomfortable in too many places. Taking into account when it was written & the era half the story focuses on allowed me to struggle through it, but IMHO there's too much racism & size shaming included in places that isn't really needed to complete the story line. I also find it odd that the lesbian couple seems to be so accepted (non-normal for the time the book was written, but great to see!), while race was portrayed in the way it was. Confusing!
If it had written race issues in a bit differently, maybe I would've enjoyed this as a nice "fluff" read.

Very sweet. Is labeled a sapphic book because there is a couple that have a romance but it is surface enough for some to view as friendship. Thor story alone was so cute and I loved reading about Idgie. But the outer story looks at aging, menopause and womanhood and that story whilst harder to get into at first was one that made the book well worth reading. It is written in a chopped up way from the perspectives of different characters and the timelines goes back and forth at the start so it’s hard to get to know the characters in Ninny’s past at first. But by the end I adored this book and really enjoyed it, truly both a cozy and heartwarming read.

Man, I reread this, which I usually don't do and I think it's a sign that I really just shouldn't... because I did not like it as much this time. If I had been reading it for the first time, I would have given it two stars, maybe one.

What I did find interesting this time was Fannie Flagg, as an author/actor. I watched some old episodes of the Match Game and it made me want more authors on television shows now. Like Hollywood Squares or whatever. I mean, I guess they're pseudo-celebrities on twitter and the internet. There are funny lady comedian/actors and I guess they've all written books, but it seems like an after thought. I want someone to get famous from writing books and then get asked to do weird game shows. Then maybe have a public feud with another author.

I laughed, I cried... what more could you ask for in a book?

I love her lyrical writing style - it brings you to the into the culture, the attitudes, the heart and soul of the deep South. I enjoyed the way she structured the story into mini chapters, from the perspective of all sorts of characters, and not necessarily in chronological order. The story is resonant and the characters one of a kind. A great book.
