Too slow

Znači zbilja sam uživala u čitanju ove knjige, u opisima prirode, u opisima preuređivanja kuće, vrta, maslinika, a nadasve u opisima hrane i objedovanja. Čisti hedonizam i nimalo stresa.

The movie is so much better. Nothing like the book. Italy and recipes are redeeming qualities

Fun at first, then annoying over time. Maybe it's just sour grapes and maybe it's because I don't particularly like memoirs, but I lost interest in reading about Mayes over-privileged life. She casually tosses out tidbits of her backstory without filling in much. However, grout decisions on the new house are laid out in painstaking measure. I understand details such as her divorce are not central to the immediate story she is telling, but some revelation on her upbringing, personal journey and character sure would make me more invested in reading boring details of her pet project.

I first read this book during a dreary February while I was living in Germany. It's a wonderful escape into the sun. Since then I often return to it in midwinter, the major drawback being it leaves me craving out-of-season produce, pasta with fresh herbs, and wishing I could have three-hour lunches on a terrace in the sun.

Aahh. It's such a wonderful vacation, reading this book.

Not sure what I expected

I’m not sure what I expected when I started to read this book. If I saw the movie, I don’t remember. I found it a bit tedious to read, overly explanatory, little plot, even for non-fiction.

I learned I want to cook Italian food and travel to Italy. Who's with me?

The book really wasn't my taste. The movie is still a favorite.

I found this to be a very calm and relaxing read. It was not a page turner, and I admit that I even fell asleep several times reading it. But that was okay with me because of the subject matter. I liked hearing everything about her little corner of Tuscany and the process they went through in restoring a house there. I felt she wrote beautiful descriptions. Oh that we all could have a little vacation home tucked away somewhere peaceful to escape to every summer.

Some of the food parts were good. They made me hungry. Overall the book did add to my desire to visit Italy.....mainly making me want to eat my way through the country.
I will say that the author's tone was a tad bit pretentious. I mean, I'm not a middle-aged English professor with grown children and a love of giving dinner parties in my Tuscan villa so......maybe it just seems pretentious to me.....not to everyone?
But that tone......that was what made it very hard for me to get through this book. I definitely won't be reading any of her others, if they carry that same air about them.
This is one of those extremely rare occasions where I can say that I most definitely enjoyed the movie way more than the book.
This was the Book Made Into a Movie in my 50 book challenge. Probably should have stuck with Fight Club.
