What an ending. What a series.

If it wasn't for the fact that the show is on and guaranteed at least another season, it would make me pretty sad to say goodbye to these characters for good. Above all, this series excelled in having unique and likable (or extremely unlikable) characters, even when it felt like the plot was going nowhere. And boy did it go somewhere, in the end. This volume does more than give us a satisfying and unexpected ending, it also justifies every detour the story ever took. Everything comes into play in some way, however small, and it makes for the best ending possible, Preacher-style.

At this point I'm genuinely curious as to how they're ever going to make this stuff work on TV. I really hope they do.

A strong, satisfying ending to a fantastic series! I love how all the loose ends are addressed and each character gets what's coming to them in the end. I was kept on the edge of my seat until the last page!

I suppose this review is for the series as a whole instead of just this book, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I really enjoyed these books. In some ways, I can't imagine having read them serially before they all had been published, and I don't actually think I would have had the stamina for it. I wasn't as hooked on this in the beginning (see: the fact that it took me six months to read the first three books and less than six weeks to read the latter three) and mainly kept going because people around me said they were great. Didn't quite seem like my cup of tea, despite me rating each book highly. But by the end I was so wrapped up in what was happening and found it to be such a bonkers ride. I don't know if this made me more inclined to read comics as a genre but I'm really glad I stuck it out with these. Looking forward to watching the TV show now that I've read the whole series.

...The strength of Preacher is in its characters. The central characters are fantastic with Custer and Cassidy being the Hall of Famers. Custer is a badass. He wants to stand up for what is right and will go to any length for it. He has strong morals and is quick to pounce on anyone who goes against them. However, he knows when to show restraint, unlike Cassidy. His altercations with Arseface and Hoover are a testament to that fact. Cassidy is short-tempered, perpetually under the influence of alcohol and has a cool-don't-give-a-damn vibe about him. However, you can tell that there is something off about him. This air of mystery brings a sense of discomfort more than the obvious intrigue. If there was one thing I disliked in both Custer and Cassidy, was the fact that they were both chauvinists. I guess it stems from the time and places the story was based in. Tulip's character is also atypical, just like everything else in Preacher. She is no damsel in distress. On the contrary, she is more than a handful with a gun and she can take on a platoon of trained guards. She can also surprise you by kicking you between the legs if you act like a jerk. Tulip's character brings the required balance to the narrative and it is a huge reason for the love story to work... And just like that...it's over.

There was a certain sadness in finishing because I knew there wouldn't be any more Preacher, but at the same time I didn't want more because Ennis did well to wrap up the whole series. There were no loose ends and every character got what they had coming (even God). I am completely satisfied.

Preacher was crude and offensive, but looking past all that, it spent a lot of time examining society and human nature. There was a healthy blend of characters, settings, writing styles and genres. Overall, Preacher was probably the best graphic novel series I have ever read. I highly recommend it.
