Grisham was certainly one of the authors who made me an avid audiobook listener/reader, when I started listening to them during a job I had back in college about 16 years ago. I found myself transfixed by the twisty law dramatics within works like the Firm, the Summons, and the Broker.

Needless to say, this is one that I hadn't picked up before, and I'm glad that I didn't. This one has a real feeling of being written by a ghostwriter while Grisham was in a slump. While it had the traditions of a Grisham law thriller (takes place in the south, has a mix of characters that help the reader understand the makings of the setting, and has a protagonist who is usually in way over their heads), it all was a little too outlandish. A newly minted lawyer starts a firm with a case worth millions and makes no mis-teps? A judge is obviously biased and never challenged by a lawyer with much more experience?

One has to always suspend their disbeliefs when reading fiction -- especially thrillers, but this one really takes the reader out on a limb. It's the first Grisham book that I struggled to finish unfortunately. Looking forward to jumping into another one soon.

An ok story, but things were too perfect, too slow, and too obvious. Easy to read, and I enjoyed the Miss Birdie plot, but the Kelly story was an unnecessary complication and got too ridiculous.

I keep wanting another Grisham book to be as good as The Pelican Brief but that was an astoundingly good story. This one was good. Just not Pelican Brief good.

This is the first Grisham novel I've ever read, and I have not seen the movie adaptation, so I had no knowledge of what to expect. This is good courtroom drama, if you're into that genre. The character of Rudy, the narrator, is very sarcastic and likeable. I enjoy his voice throughout. Overall, I enjoyed it.

A good read.
Classic Grisham.
A little predictable.

There isn't much unique about this John Grisham novel. Grisham tends to be anti-corporation, anti-big name lawyers, anti-bully in his novels and this is no exception. However, I really enjoy these storylines, so I enjoyed this book. I'm a sucker for little guys winning over the big guys. I love it when the underdog wins it all. There did seem to be a weird sub-storyline with Rudy and Kelly. I think the story would have been just as good (if not better) without it. I suppose it humanized Rudy, but I think that was done better with different parts of the story.

Good read for the first three-quarters of the book. Disappointing and pointless ending.
