Sorry guys, I couldn't finish this, not because it was super bad or anything, but because I had to take it back to the library today and I ran out of renewals on it....yikes. So that review will have to wait until I can get it again, probably after the holidays, although my thoughts will probably be the same as the other two. So sorry for everyone who was awaiting my review on this! :(

I will admit to not wanting to read this very much because the main character is a brat. in this story she gets over that a bit so it was better than I hoped.

Didn't realize this was the third book in a series. I think I would have appreciated it far more if I'd read the previous two, as much of its heroine's backstory played out in the two previous books in the series. But even so, the story here isn't all that engaging, perhaps because our heroine is pretty much a bystander, with not much at stake in the outcome of the machinations of the court of the country she is visiting as a potential bride to one of the 3 heirs to the country's throne. Still, love Shinn's writing, and her fantasy societies. Will have to go back and check out the earlier books in the series.

Much more political intrigue with the longest slow burn in the series so far!

Jeweled Fire takes place immediately after Royal Airs with Corene making her way to Malinqua with Foley, along with Steff, a long-lost grandson of the empress of Malinqua. Once there, things seem harmless enough, but Corene being Corene, she starts to see that should she try to leave the inner court without a guard, things start to go downhill. And there seems to be more to the deaths in the family then are originally thought to be. Will Corene be able to figure things out and be able to get out, or will Foley need to be more than just a guard?

Probably my favorite book thus far in the series. I really enjoyed the characters and the intriguing world building. I could hardly put this book down and cannot wait for the next installment.

The only thing I would change is the way Sharon Shinn's stories seem to come to an abrupt and overly tidy end. There is no denouement to process the climactic action, and all the loose story lines are gathered in a pretty bow and concluded within a chapter.

I admit. I thought more of this author. I don't know if that's a reflection of the book or just my perspective and attitude. Court intrigue doesn't do it for me.

A romantic murder mystery. I guess I expected more?
