I'm glad I got to finish this.
This is one über cool, high-stakes, revenge-driven fantasy story that takes place in a Spanish-influenced world. Fun and fast paced.
And one main character that breaks YA formulas for not being your typical lady in distress.
Amy Tintera sure knows how to write action and how to make her characters suffer. (Points to that last scene).

You were born useless, but you don’t have to be helpless”

No ma neanche inutile figlia mia. Evita di essere entrambe le cose, no? Impegnati, almeno.
No, lei nasce inutile e resta pure cogliona.

Come?
No.

I've had this book on my radar for a while and am finally getting around to read it. At first, I worried that it would follow too many of the tropes in YA fantasy romances, and I can't deny that it does exactly that. However, it wasn't long before I was adoring the characters and their struggles, and cheering them on as they fought for their lives and their kingdoms. At first I was skeptical of Em. She seemed a little too snarky for my liking. But as the story went on, I found her to be complex and more vulnerable than she was willing to admit (though that's not to say she isn't tough and can't hold her own in a fight). Cas is also a great character, and he reacted the way I expected him to (most of the time). The plot had awesome pacing, and things were starting to collapse for the characters around the middle of the book, which thankfully didn't drag anything out. That said, I'm wondering where things will go from here and am starting book two to find out!

I read this so quickly and the ending made me itch for the sequel. Em was a fun character to follow and I was all for her and Cas together. I liked how Cas started to speak out more to his family and voice his own opinions, even when they all believed it was all because of Em's influence. The development of intrigue and character relations was just so entertaining to me. I am so glad I finally read this and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

This review and many more can be found on my blog: Feed Your Fiction Addiction

On the surface, this book seems like it might be sort of derivative. It's not. Well, okay, it sort of is. I mean, just based on the basic description, I feel like I've read this book before: Em's parents were murdered because a power-hungry king is afraid of her people's abilities, and she wants revenge. She decides to pass herself off as the prince's bride-to-be (possible since they've never actually met), but she falls in love with the prince and starts to doubt her plan to betray him. It sounds vaguely familiar, right.

But Tintera makes this series stand out because she doesn't sugarcoat anything. Em's no wronged angel, she's a killer, right from the very start. And though her people may have been unfairly hunted, Em's mother was brutal herself and gave people reason to fear her. And while Cas is innocent enough that Em falls in love with him, he isn't perfect---he's turned a blind eye to his father's inhumanity, excusing it in order to hide from any sense of guilt. And Tintera never really lets up. This isn't the sort of story where everyone realizes they were wrong and they fix their mistakes and get a simple happily ever after. The characters (and the realistic political embroilments) are too complex for that. No, once things get underway, it almost doesn't matter what anyone wants anymore---there are kingdoms and many lives at stake. Tintera never lets us forget that!

This story is simply brilliant. It has everything I want in a fantasy: high stakes, complex characters, and deadly magic! I give it 5/5 Stars.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book recommended to me by Basic Book Babe! It was predictable but still surprised me and a lovely easy read. I think it would make a fantastic movie series! Reminds me a bit of the hunger games.
