I picked this book up in an effort to read more on topic of immigration. The writing was okay and I was not bored. I found the author's sometimes judgmental attitude and self-pitying tone hard to take.

3.5 Stars.

A wonderful memoir written by a Latina author of her poor family trying to get to the US and create a new life. When her family crumbled she was able to find support and persist in her education. My favorite line, when she was struggling with her separate identities was shared by a mentor “You are now bilingual, bicultural, and binational. You are not less. You are more.”

Can’t say enough how meaningful it is to be able to read about characters, places, and feelings you know and can relate to because of a shared cultural experience. Grande beautifully captures the immigrant experience and challenged me to think about the ways in which I have engaged or forgotten my ancestral homeland and its culture. But mostly, it made me proud to read our stories instead of what is usually available. I needed more books like these growing up, but now I’m just glad to be able to share them with my kids.

Reyna Grande did a lovely job of describing her experiences in crossing the border. Family pressure, mom-guilt - all universal topics but these things and all she went thru as an immigrant made for a beautiful memoir! I love reading about experiences completely unlike my own - makes me think and be a better human. Loved it!!

Reyna Grande has a way of making the reader experience her story/writing. Though I prefer faster paces, this book was enjoyable. Each chapter was like climbing a mountain until you reached the end, feeling victorious.

"A Dream Called Home" explores the life of Reyna Granda as she tries to settle into American life. Despite the vast changes and double-time she spends pursuing her dreams, her identity never falters. Even her complicated relationship with her parents that became her biggest challenge doesn't keep her from the dream of gaining a home and writing.

I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a really nice book. I had to read this for my history class, but it didn't feel like required reading in the least. Grande writes in an engaging manner, keeping you interested. I would definitely recommend this book.
