I wanted to scream my throat dry before the epilogue.

First of all- Why tf do authors feel the need to include backstabbing endings. I just want to read one book, ONE, where the couple ends up together. I cant stand this backstabbing bullshit anymore. Just work together. It’s clearly the only solution. I almost sobbed because this is the fifth book this month where I haven’t gotten a happy ending. How to people even come back from these? How do they continue to love each other after everything? It makes me soukd like an amateur reader but Its just so bothersome as a reader because I can see what the mc CANT. Ugh just give me the next book please.

Secondly: I know I said I hated Kasta but he’s actually not that bad. I don’t love him but hes trying and redeeming himself. And he’s right for Zahru. Which brings me to my next point, ZAHRU OPEN YOUR DAMN EYES. Jet barely even looks at you. KASTA HAS DONT EVERYTHING FOR YOU. HES BEEN NOTHING BUT KIND AND HELPFUL. GIRL PLEASE. ADMIT YOUR FEELINGS. also his blue eyes? MAAM. Jet is being a brat.

I cant even. This book was a rollercoaster. Just wow. I was screaming until the epilogue. It gave me some relief.

This had me up last night screaming and squealing in second hand embarrassment, joy, shock, and horror. I still have no words. Maybe I'll come back in a couple days and update this once I've stewed on it, but as of right now... THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. Skip to the last paragraph if you like short reviews for a summary.

As with the first book, this only gets a 4.75 just because I really do hate love triangles, and if I didn't have an obvious type, I would've been really torn with this one. It's truly a testament to Mae's incredible writing. Another reason why I knocked off 0.25 is because it had a very slow start and did tend to drag in places. Never fear though, it definitely picked up by the end. The final thing that knocked it down from a solid 5 stars was the miscommunication trope. I adore enemies to lovers, but enemies to lovers with an extreme miscommunication trope... Not so much. It's easy to make two people misunderstand each other and fall in love. It's a lot harder to make two people who hate each other without major miscommunication problems  fall in love. However, this isn't to say Mae took the "easy way out", because her plot will tell you otherwise.

I loved this book, I truly did. A few minor things knocked it down from being a five star read, but they're only personal preferences.  If you enjoyed A Kinder Poison even a little, you have to read this. There's no second book syndrome here this one was even better than the first one. Here's to the last book!

I really enjoyed this one, not as much as the first but it's a very interesting arc and I can't wait to see where the third one takes us!!

3.5 stars rounded up.

This can't be the last book. Sure, it wraps up (a little too neatly) the plot of the book, but there's still an overarching plot that needs to be resolved. I hope it hits the required sales to get a book 3!!

Jet is about to be crowned and Zahru hides that she has the gods' mark until Kasta reappears (this isn't a spoiler... it's in the summary) also with a mark. The two suddenly are poised to rule together while trying not to tear one another apart.

I liked that Zahru delved into her dark side and really becomes just as bad as Kasta. They would work SO WELL together if they weren't so delusional about one another. They are so convinced that one another are evil, but if they discussed things without letting their emotions get the better of them, things would have gotten done... but this is a YA story and these are all KIDS so they're emotional and stupid.

Yeah basically all I have to say about this is that if Zahru and Kasta could communicate, it would be a lot shorter of a series, but better in my opinion. I WANT them to be a dark dynamic duo. I WANT them to work together and defeat their foes. I want them to love one another openly.

Overall, a decent second book in the series and I desperately hope there's a book three because it needs it. (I mean, how can Serpent and Dove stretch into three books when this can't?! S&D needed to remain two books and this needs a third.)

I am so happy at least the last chapter was from Kasta's POV. But I still do not like the protagonist, she is not all correct and Kasta is not all wrong. I just wanted Kasta to be Mestra. Even when the former Mestra spoke he wanted Kasta to be Domil and her to be some kind of Veto power. I really didn't like the fact that they tried to portray him as a villain. And i really hate the phrase "He has a darkness within him" wtf. You mean to say he is not responsible for his actions thus he cannot change!!
As for the protagonist if the next book is also from her POV I think I might DNF it.

consumed by her desire for revenge and her obsession to 'defeat' kasta, zahru unknowingly became the villain herself.

now THIS is how you write a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, corruption arc. 🤌
