I got this with the Austen LitJoyCrate and was super hyped for it! Overall, I enjoyed reading it. But there were parts of the novel that were slow and painfully so. There were moments when the plot and interiority of the protagonist were at odds with one another and it made it difficult for me to connect to her and believe the stakes of the main outer conflict. Ultimately, if you're looking for something "austen-like" or something that is "austen lite" then you'll enjoy this novel. But if triangles, miscommunication and inconsistent pacing irrated you, then this may be a hard read.

Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance definitely gave me all the Jane Austen vibes I wanted. It definitely makes me excited to jump into Jennieke's other book, My Fine Fellow. In this, you will meet Vicky. Now Vicky and I have something in common, we both love Elizabeth Bennet.

So, it's pretty safe to assume that I really liked getting to know Vicky. I also ended up liking Tom as well. Between him or Mr. Carmichael, yes, I rooted for Tom all the way. Mostly because they definitely had their cute moments and some serious chemistry. It was hard to look away from that and not ship them.

Other than the romance, we do get a fun mystery to solve. Or at least you can try to solve. I personally didn't want to figure it out before the big reveals came my way. Mostly because it was just fun to see what was going to happen next. I do, however, feel like we could have had a bit more drama to spice things up. A little weird to say but it didn't seem like we got that much to begin with.

Other than that, definitely enjoyed this book and I'm so happy that I found the time to listen to it. The narrator did an amazing job in my eyes, and I secretly hope it's the same narrator for the next book. If not, I'll live. I guess.

While I enjoyed this quick read, I was somewhat troubled by the not infrequent anachronisms - or at least what I assume are anachronism. I’m planning to research the regency period to get a better grasp on the historical context.

I also thought the big reveal/ending was predictable. I guessed from the beginning who was behind the strange happenings, and found it utterly unbelievable that none of the characters seriously considered the man who ended up being the ‘bad guy’.

If you're a fan of regency novels, Jane Austen, and teenage romance you will eat this book up! Set early in the nineteenth century; this novel follows Vicky, a young well off lady who is disheartened that her life isn't more like a Jane Austen novel. She wants the romance and intrigue; instead she gets herself in laughably dangerous situations and her former childhood friend (now sworn enemy) seems to keep showing up at the right moment to rescue her. She can take care of herself, thank you very much! To make matters more complicated, her older sister is seeking a separation from her husband and in order to protect the family estate from her bully husband, Vicky must get married and do so quickly. Witty, charming, over the top, and so much fun. I hope the author writes more just like this.

I wasn’t compelled by the characters, the pacing was weird from the start and the MC went off on a tangent about how great the British estate system is and how landlords are super necessary or something like that. Idk I just don’t need to continue

This book was not for me. I followed my 50 page rule and just could not get into it. I love Austen and I think that's why I couldn't get into it.

I did not connect with any characters.

I did not care for the style of writing (it was too modern, but trying so hard to be like Austen to me - the disconnect was too much).

I didn't find the plot compelling (a girl MUST marry by the end of the season or else her family's estate will fall into the clutches of her sister's abusive husband who she's trying to divorce - I'm calling it now, she ends up with the neighbor who used to be her bff who cast her aside probably because of his abusive father).

It's evident that it's personal preference that's behind the low rating. There's a market for the book, though.
