Started skimming. Tough read. Didn’t like characters. Kept me reading because of occasional surprises: the couple is black, he hid from the war, Buzz was his lover - what? And some beautiful passages. How you do and do not know your spouse. How no one on outside can see (like a ship in the sea).

DNF'd at 53% because I Just. Don't. CARE.

I wanted something short and sweet to knock out in a day or so as my last book took me about a week to get through, and I wanted something quick. At 208 pages, I figured this would be a breeze.

It was not a breeze.

Today, on day 4, I've decided to throw in the towel and move on. I've got to say, the initial reveal of what was actually going on was surprising. Not your normal 'cheatin' spouse' kind of story, but after that, I rapidly lost interest.

Pearlie is a doormat, Buzz is a kind of an asshole, but you also feel kind of sorry for him, the aunts were weird, and Holland is barely there (at least for the first half of the book).

Overall, while the writing is decent, it's done in a way that I think is supposed to come off as thought-provoking and deep, but instead comes off as booooooring and sloooooooow. Since life's too short to read books that don't interest me, I'm moving on!

Excellent literary novel that deals with relationships, race, social status and sexual mores. Charles "Buzz" Drumer shows up one afternoon 6 years into the marriage of Pearlie and Holland; Buzz knew Holland in WW 2. The miscues, miscommunications, unvoiced fears and hopes of the 3 adults result in several surprise turns in the story.

I didn’t really get the plot until the very end LOL. I love Grear’s writing style, but the content wasn’t really for me… but I really really loved his writing style haha that’s undeniable.

Crediamo di conoscerli, di amarli. Ma ciò che amiamo si rivela una traduzione scadente da una lingua che conosciamo appena.

La mia vita non era interessante, pensavo, ma lo erano i libri che leggevo.

Il mondo non era delle anime miti ma dei cuori straziati, famelici, appassionati: gli altri non erano neppure considerati vivi.

Non potevo mandar giù un altro grammo di mondo.

Non so cosa unisca le parti dell’atomo, ma a legare gli esseri umani sembra sia il dolore.

Come si fa a farsi amare da qualcuno? Per una donna molto giovane non c’è niente di più difficile al mondo. Puoi sforzarti quanto vuoi: vivere accanto a un uomo, cucinargli il piatto preferito, versargli il vino o cantargli le canzoni d’amore che sai che lo emozionano. Ma lui non si emoziona. Mai. Sprecherai le giornate sforzandoti di interpretare le sciocche banalità di una sua telefonata; i mesi a guardare le sue labbra morbide mentre parla; gli anni a osservare il suo corpo seduto su una sedia esortandoti ad attraversare la stanza per fare un piccolo gesto, dire una parola in modo che lui ti ami ; e non lo farai. Sprecherai lunghe notti a chiederti come mai non lo senta anche lui - l’impulso ad abbracciarti, il cuore che si scioglie quando gli sei accanto-, come faccia a stare seduto su quella sedia, a parlare con quelle labbra, a farti una telefonata che non vuol dire niente di speciale. A non nascondere niente nel cuore. O forse nasconde quello che non vuoi vedere. Perché di certo ama qualcuno: solo che non sei tu.

Chissà se l’amore, come una perla, si forma sempre intorno ai resti induriti di vita?

Ho detto che il dolore è rivelatore. A volte è quello che ci vuole per spezzare la solitudine, per aprire brevemente quella piccola finestra oltre noi stessi: la vita di qualcun altro.

Non avevo ancora trent’anni, e fra tutte le cose la peggiore mi sembrava questa: nessuno mi avrebbe più conosciuta da giovane. Per qualsiasi uomo avessi incontrato, sarei stata di quell’età o più vecchia. Nessuno si sarebbe messo a pensare a com’ero giovane e fragile a diciott’anni.

Un po’ come quando ci si sveglia nel cuore della notte strappati a un bel sogno e si prova a ricominciarlo da dove si era rimasti. Ti convinci che è possibile: chiudi gli occhi, ricordando il punto esatto dove ti sei interrotto: un cespuglio di rose, un picnic, la mamma morta da tanto tempo. Così ti riaddormenti e riprendi a sognare - ma non sarà mai, mai lo stesso sogno. Ogni volta svanisce per sempre.
