The ending felt like the middle

I read this because I'm a big Stacey Abrams fan. I liked the book and the story even if the love felt a bit forced. I was actually most interested in the case. The ending was abrupt and felt like it just needed 30 more pages. I'm happy to see there's another book, but I really would have preferred that the case wrapped up in this book.

I went into this book thinking it was simply a contemporary romance, but it was so much more than that. It was part murder mystery, part police procedural, and yes, the romance was a major factor to the story line as well. I really enjoyed the characters in this book but felt the romance was a bit contrived. Still, though, I found it really entertaining and I was fully invested in the story. There are layers of complexity to the plot, so it isn't just a basic formulaic story. Unfortunately, the ending was completely unsatisfying. I was enjoying where the story was going so I glanced down expecting about an hour left in the book and was dismayed to see only three minutes remaining. The cliffhanger is huge and the story is so unfinished! Please, Stacey Abrams, I know you're doing amazing things in your various political offices and campaigns, but I'm going to need you to WRITE MORE BOOKS. I'll read the second book in the series, but it follows another character mentioned in the first book, so while it will not further the story as much as fill in gaps from another perspective, it will at least take place in the same universe and should ultimately lead toward the end goal.

Murder mysteries that I can’t solve are one thing, but cliff hangers are another. The ending was infuriating.

This book is part murder mystery, part legal drama and part romance. The legal drama is by far the best part. Anyone who can successfully respond to a heresy objection in a book is a real attorney. But the romance felt a little hollow. The character development was slow so it seemed fake that Luke & Kell fell in love so quick. They didn’t even know each other and love at first sight seemed unlikely for their personalities.

Overall, this is no Bridgerton novel, but still somewhat fun to read.

I really enjoyed the other Selena Montgomery/Stacey Abrams book I read, but this one fell a little flat. Before I found her work to have unique and lovely vocabulary choices, but in this one, I just wanted to get to the end. The arc left me a little wanting, and it wasn't even resolved, in order to set up the next book. This is not how I prefer my romantic suspence novels to progress. I'm not really interested in the mystery, so I don't want to continue the series.

This was picked for a book club, so I didn't fully know what the book was about going into it. I was expecting a romance piece, but the mystery/legal main story was an unexpected surprise. While some of Kell's observations about her role as a defense attorney rang true to me (as a defense attorney), it still had elements of overdramatized legal proceedings, which always removes me from the story.

I did not realize this book was also part of a planned trilogy, so I would echo other reviews that state this book gives you no closure whatsoever. In terms of the romance piece, Luke rubbed me the wrong way - he seemed very machismo & entitled as a male character, which really rubbed me the wrong way. This may be virtue of the times and/or small-town setting, but that definitely me cringe. The other thing that lowered my rating was that while I thought the story well-developed, the romance was not. It felt like immediately Luke & Kell were ravenous for each other and there was no build-up or development, which made it hard for me to buy in.

I hate an incomplete story, cliffhangers are the worst! But I’m committed. Montgomery’s book rivals a Shonda Rhimes series. The language is a little over the top but storyline keeps you interested. While it does follow the classic romance novel formula, all the desire is wrapped up in flowery images that leave you waiting for the action.

Just great fun. A great crime story with a delicious romance on top!

The capacity of Stacey Abram's heart and mind and soul. I would like my president to write romance novels—yes, please. I thought this was well written but some descriptions were hard to visualize and I wasn't invested in the whole power struggle between two "powerful" career people. (I proudly have never fantasized about a police officer, thanks very much.)

The book also ties up zero loose ends, and only lightly teases the next book. I wanted to feel some sort of larger resolution beyond Luke & Kell finally professing love.

Also, where's the SEX?!

Filing this away…

A compelling setup with characters I didn’t necessarily like at first, though I rooted for them all the same. I enjoyed the setting. The first half didn’t hold my attention that firmly, but I stayed up and read the second half in one night. I definitely will follow these characters into the sequel!
