Honestly, I should be more mad, because the promise of dogs wasn’t really fulfilled, but I am a giant sucker for found family. And heists.

My least favorite of the two series. I think the story forgot what it was supposed to be about.

We started out with Marc, who figures out someone is trying to kill him. Since he's apparently well known, locally at least (yet another 28 year old, self made almost billionaire, nothing to see here, folks!), and he's afraid it's one of his siblings that's trying to kill him, he can't be seen with a bodyguard, so they decide to have Royce pretend to be his boyfriend, instead.

Ok, fake boyfriend trope, I'm totally there for this one!

Only fake didn't last so long, because these guys were instantly hot for each other's bods, if ya know what I mean! (of course you know what I mean, you've seen this show before!

And then we roll along, sexing it up, getting to know each other....not much has happened with the big attempted murder investigation. No more attempts have been made on Marc's life. His siblings aren't the greatest, very condescending and judgy, but no one seems murder happy. Secrets are found about all of them, random gambling and money problems, but worth killing your brother over? Plus, I never really got why Marc had so many issues. Sure, he was the baby who never quite fit, and sure, his parents died, but he put himself through some serious shit for a while, and I'm not sure I got why he was so damaged.

And suddenly, a wild sub-plot appears! Royce has a long lost family that shows up, making threats and demands. And now, in the middle of bodyguarding and forgotten murder attempts, these guys jet off to Italy to deal with Royce's family drama! To
Spoiler break into a home and steal a priceless painting, no less!
So the rest of the book is spent dealing with Royce, his mafia family, and feelings of inferiority.

Wait, wasn't someone trying to kill Marc before this wild sub-plot happened? Oh yeah, that gets taken care of in the last little bit of the book, followed by a
Spoiler stupid break up and way too easy get back together weeks later
So really, the story about Marc's attempted murder and terrible siblings gets completely over shadowed by Royce's shit.

ETA: and wtf is with Lucas and Andrei getting married off page? All the Unbreakable shorts between all the main books, and they couldn't give us a wedding or a honeymoon? Rude!

Oh, BTW, who the hell was Dorian? Was it just some allegory to Dorian Gray that didn't quite fit the narrative? Did I miss someone named Dorian? I'm confused. I know Marc paints, but was that really it?

Starting off really strong in this bodyguard themed spinoff, a fake boyfriend scenario turns a seemingly professional straightforward gig into a thick UST that can barely be cut.

This time around, affluent art dealer Marc Foster has had 3 near fatal accidents, and he doesn’t want to admit to himself that it might just be one of his siblings who wants him out of the picture. Thus, he employs the best of the best - Ward Security - and gets Royce attached to his hip for the foreseeable future.

Royce is a dedicated employee, and he does his job very well. He is a complete professional having sworn off from ever having feelings for another due to a horrible tragedy. Surely his no nonsense, gruff angry countenance will stave off any attachment - on his end or Marc’s. However, close proximity is nobody’s friend when trying to keep personal distance, and of course these two fall hard for each other, whether they want to or not.

The first part of this book was spot on for me, but then Royce’s past rears its ugly head and things quickly devolve into several entertaining, but disbelieving, plot points. What this series does well is the fun supportive group dynamic of all the employees under Rowe’s care. They’re all badass which makes for them taking care of business like, well…. nobody’s business. I like pragmatic decisive no holds barred when it applies to putting the smack down on the baddies. What I like less is D/s overtones that don’t titillate, sex at inconvenient times, and sacrificing one’s happiness for the good of the other. Ugh.

Overall, I enjoyed myself, but I wouldn’t say this is a favorite

I’ve been intrigued by Royce since he was first introduced, and I definitely wouldn’t have paired the somewhat shady bodyguard with a model-like artist - but Marc and Royce just WORK together. Their chemistry was off-the-charts hot, and that scene in Italy - hoo boy!

There is lots of action and mystery, some from trying to find out who’s trying to kill Marc, and some from Royce’s past popping up. There’s even a fun adventure involving Angelo, a modern-day Robin Hood that I’m really looking forward to seeing more of in the future.

Aside from the action and romance, though, there’s the strong message of brotherhood from the Ward Security guys, who would never leave one of their own without help when needed. Even though this isn’t technically a part of the Unbreakable Bonds series, it still seems like an apt term for the camaraderie these guys share, even if it takes some of them longer to realize it.

5 love-this-series-give-me-more stars!

3.5 stars. I found that it was putting to much into the book. It had us splitting focus to much and overall pulled us away from the main story line which had one of the most pathetic ending, it honestly felt thrown in as an afterthought because you need to tie that knot. I think it would have worked better if they’d solved one crime and then had to move onto the next to quickly for it to be finished, or even had Marc demanding to help. anyway, not my story, lol, and it is what they wanted, but for me, it pulled me way to far out of the story to care anymore. I did however love the romance.

description

WE NEED LOVE.

Great Story

This was a great story. However, I took off one star because I figured out who the culprit was we’ll before the characters did. I’m not the biggest fan of mob related stories but this was good.
