I really liked this book the first time I read it. I didn't mind the "twist", and I thought it was an interesting and different vampire concept. For all of the comparisons to Twilight, I thought that this series was far superior. Bianca is not quite as dense and silly as Bella is, and unlike Bella is capable of keeping it together without Lucas being omnipresent. It is the slightly Bella-esque qualities that made me not like the book quite as much upon rereading. I sincerely doubt Romeo and Juliet would have worked in the long-term, and that makes the romance between Lucas and Bianca less believable to me. However, their characters are more deep than those of Edward and Bella, and there is actually a plot (omg!). I also wonder if Claudia Gray selected the names of the characters on purpose - Bianca meaning "white, pure" and Lucas meaning "light, bright" (it could alternatively mean wolf and has been used in werewolf tales for that reason, but I am pretty sure that's not the case here). Both of those names seem pretty symbolic.

Bianca is the new girl at Evernight Academy, a place where the rich kids are more voracious than usual. It’s the first day and already she has been tackled (literally) by who could be the most gorgeous and dangerous guy in school. Lucas Ross is also a new student at Evernight, and he is constantly warning Bianca to be careful and looking out for her. What happens if she is not the one in real danger, but he is? Or is he? Secrets will be revealed and unbreakable bonds will be formed that will create havoc both for Bianca’s and Lucas’s families.

I won’t give much background here, because part of the fun in reading this was the surprise bombs that kept falling. And I mean surprises that will leave you reeling momentarily in mix of confusion, shock and wonder. So, that first paragraph is all you’re getting from me!

The beginning story is a bit slow going, but there is a bunch of school drama, boy drama, etc, to keep you entertained for the most part. But it took a heck of a long time for the first supernatural thing to be mentioned. All the first part was suspense and hints at weird things. I just wanted someone to come out and shout “SUPERNATURALS LIVE HERE!” Or something. I thought it was very cleverly done though. How Claudia Gray (author) managed to skip all the incriminating details, failing to mention certain key elements. It really had me guessing for a while.

Aside from falling in love with the main characters and their romance, I really liked one of the secondary characters. Usually I don’t even mention them in my reviews, but I will here. I’m talking about sexy sweet Balthazar. I hope he makes more appearances in the other novels and I can’t wait for the release of his novelette.

The ending had me feeling very sad but hopeful for the continuation of this story. I strongly recommend Evernight to every vamp lover out there. You’ll love this! Believe me, as soon as I finished reading it, I went online and ordered the other three novels. I can’t wait until they get here!

This was very easy to get through, short and fast paced it's good for when you just want to take a short break from the real world. I haven't read about vampires for so long, not since the whole twilight era . . . not that I actually read twilight. But it seemed like vampires were the only thing anyone was writing about.

Read the better and longer version of this here.

The book is set in a beautiful old stone castle, the main character complains about it but in my mind it's gorgeous. Towers and everything. There are weird rules and stunning students, dead squirrels and a ball coming up in a couple of months. It's all action, kind of, well not really.

Would I recommend it?
Sure, although if you're looking to get really involved with the characters and plot . . . then maybe not. This is better off as a casual read. Usually if I like a series I HAVE to read them one after the other, although with this series I feel as though I can get through them slowly. I do have the next three books though (they came as a set for $10 and one of them is a hardback, hell yeah) so I'll probably get around to reading the sooner or later.

Oh hey! If you've read this far why not check out my blog? It's Frankly Books for those of you who are wondering.

I got serious [b:Hex Hall|5287473|Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1)|Rachel Hawkins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1368393885l/5287473._SY75_.jpg|5354884] vibes from this book. I know Evernight is written 2 years prior to Hex Hall, but still. The same boarding school drama, the same love triangle drama, where Bianca = Sophie, Lucas = Archer, and Balthazar = Cal (even their personalities...
Spoilerand the fact that both Lucas and Archer are part of a 'resistance' group where they hunt and kill the vampires/Prodigiums...
).

It's a quick read, and a fine story, but I prefer Hex Hall. There's just something more that I'm missing from this book. Mainly because the main character is horrible a lot of the time.

Bianca’s parents assume new teaching positions at Evernight Academy, forcing her to leave everything familiar behind. Despite there persistence that she needs to give Evernight a chance, Bianca can’t help but feel like she doesn’t belong. Until she meets another loner, Lucas.
Bianca feels like she can tolerate Evernight with Lucas at her side. Bianca unknowingly reveals her true self to Lucas, ultimately revealing the mystery behind Evernight. Not only is Evernight an academic academy it is also a haven for vampires.

But Bianca isn’t the only one keeping secrets. Once Bianca discovers the true intentions of Lucas’s presence at Evernight, she feels more than betrayed. Will their bond be able to stand against the forces that threaten to keep them apart.

*For those of you who have read Evernight, and you are questioning who is this Lucas person? I talked to Claudia and Jared was changed to Lucas at the last minute!

I started reading Evernight, and I couldn’t put it down until I was finished! Now I find myself longing for the sequel! Evernight will be an easy favorite to fans of vampire lore. It’s a fascinating tale of a mysterious academy, forbidden romance, and dark secrets! Gray's writing is refreshing and smooth. The characters are well developed and intriguing. I’m hoping to learn more about the vampire characters and their lives, possibly in the next novel. The small glimpse into Balthazar’s life was more than interesting. The plot, despite the growing number of vampire books and vampire books that are centered around academies, was actually very original. Evernight’s official release is set for May 27, 2008. I recommend that you get a copy for yourself!
