Unearthed is the first book I've read by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.
It is a pretty standard YA dystopian sci-fi romance novel set in a world where (poor) people are dying from lack of... things, and salvation seems to come in the form of a dead alien race that supposedly left all their technology behind for the cleverest to find and use. Sure.
The sci-fi is a bit standard, though I liked the general setting and clues solving of the book, but the romance didn't really do it for me, because of the cringe-worthy lines that were sometimes used.
At this point I'm not sure if I'm going to continue on because I do feel this book is a bit out of my age-range and there's so many more stories to read.
Happy Reading!

I'm so disappointed. At about 150 pages I called it quits. The storyline has no movement - the groundwork for the mystery is being laid, but there wasn't enough there to pull me in.
I love that the exploration and archeology vibe is set on another planet - and it seems it's in the same world as the Starbound series (the name LaRoux is vaguely referenced).
My real problem was the surprisingly instalove-like connection between Jules and Mia. WHY?!? It felt very forced and had no real heat to it.
I wanted to like this one so much, as I truly admire both authors.

Okay, I think this is good, but my expectations were really high. Like exceedingly high for no reason. I wanted a sci-fi-Indiana Jones-Uncharted-Tomb Raider sort of adventure and I didn't really get that so I gotta take some time to figure out what I liked and what I didn't like. Because if I wrote a review now, it'd be a rant, and I don't think this book deserves it. So, actual review to come in a couple of days!
This was a decently entertaining, run-of-the-mill YA book.
The whole tomb raiding part of the book wasn't all that exciting. The puzzles were not very difficult and it never really felt that much like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft in space.
I actually did quite like Mia's character.
The insta-love between the two leads happens right from the get go and never really lets up. It's not too terrible in terms of the actual romance, but there were a lot of sentences devoted to how much they loved looking at each other.
The ending was kind of interesting where it left off for book two. I'll probably read the next one, but it's not super high on my list of to-reads.

This book was seriously fantastic. It is absolutely worth reading BUT if you hate being left on a serious cliffhanger for a LONG time...then I would wait on this one because I am kicking myself for reading it so close to the release!

Not gonna lie: I was a little disappointed in this one. Partly though, that's my own fault. I have such ridiculously high expectations for Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. The Starbound Trilogy is one of my absolute favorite stories to have been put on paper, and I was expecting from Unearthed what I got in [b:These Broken Stars|13138635|These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1383578978s/13138635.jpg|18315607] — and outstanding beginning to a moving trilogy with characters I adored right off the bat and who I would have killed for by the end (plus, Tarver + Lilac = FAVORITES).
What I got was a book I liked. Which should be great, cuz I might not have liked it at all, I just wanted more. More from Jules, who was super sweet and felt things very deeply on top of being super smart and unsure and naive. More from Mia, who was reckless and brave and funny and closed-off and protective. More excitement in the alien temple, more powerful writing, more message. Everything was there, I just needed more.
However, I am giving this book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 instead of down to 3, because the last third or so of the book was exactly what I was hoping for. Mystery on mystery, alien tech, unsteady alliances, etc. And I did like the characters and their distinct voices even if they didn't always live up to my expectations. And, of course, I love these authors who always leave me wanting more.
Now I just have to live with the fact that it will be forever before I get to see where this story goes next...

Really, this is a high 4.5 star rating, it just blew me away. The description of Indiana Jones in space I’ve seen floating around is just spot on hehe. The archaeology love is plain and brilliant. The way Jules’ love in particular is described just flew off the page for me. And I love the give and take between him and Mia. It did feel a tiny bit too Insta crush for me, but only a tiny bit. Their banter was epic too. As well as Jules packing everything possibly including the kitchen sink, bless his heart.
I loved all the backstory we get, and the way the mystery is laid out. And the International Alliance definitely fulfills the creepy overstepping evil conglomerate role nicely!
I do naturally love languages and maths too, and sharing this discovery with Jules and Mia really felt natural and exciting as they found new bits.
One of the only negatives I can really think of is that the first big reveal was a bit too obvious for me. And the other is that it’s quite a visual book and so it’s a shame there’s no maps or drawings of traps or rooms etc. That would have been really cool. But nothing major on either.
And that leads me on to the ending. So right before the penultimate reveal I guessed what would happen there, but literally only a few pages before, perfectly timed and set up. But the final one?? No way. I need book 2 now to see if my suspicions about that are correct!! I know I’m being SUPER cryptic right now, but I really don’t want to spoil that for anyone. If anyone wants to talk theories feel free to get in touch haha!

Unpopular opinion time: I didn’t care for this book.
The chapters alternate between Jules and Mia’ perspectives and for at least half the book there’s mention every single chapter about how hot the other is. The instant attraction is strong in this book, just barely saving the romantic plot line from instalove because feelings are never actually declared.
It’s also an incredibly easy book to figure out plot-wise if you read a lot. I saw the big twist coming from early on in the book, which made reading it a bit more of a trial when compounded with the weak/annoying romance. Granted, many readers may not figure it out so easily, but by just over halfway through things became a little more obvious.
Bottom line is that I almost stopped reading it numerous times and now having finished it, I don’t feel that my time was entirely wasted, but I don’t plan on reading the rest of the series.

Initial thoughts: pretty cool, liked it but not spectacular; Jules seemed a bit too 'perfect' for me and also almost the anti-nerd stereotype which was fresh but also a bit weirdly done in my opinion. Amelia was awesome though and I like the ending, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in Undying! Plot wise it was alright and I have to say I sorely agree with Cait @ Paper Fury's analogy that it's like the game Temple Run!!!
