Another book I wish I could give 3.5 stars. Sarah Dessen continues to live on as one of the favorite authors of my teenage years. Remy as narrator...not so much. Her tough-girl attitude didn't really give way until the end. I did however, enjoy the flow and continuity of the writing. One thing Dessen always excels in is the writing and description of her setting. Especially in this novel, she made me feel very at home. So, in the end, not my favorite book of hers, but not too shabby either.

‘That would make it simple, wouldn’t?’ he said, nodding. ‘And Remy likes simple. You think you have everything figured out, that you can chart my reaction and what I’m saying on some little graph you keep tracked away. But life isn’t like that.’
‘Oh really?’ I said. ‘Then what is it like? You tell me.’
‘I meant what I said to you. I wasn’t playing some kind of summer game. Everything I said was true, from the first day. Every goddamn word.’

I had this copy laying around for the past three months and never had the interest of opening it until I put it in my bag and read it during class. Completely finished it in a matter of 3 subjects.

It was such a fast-paced, romcom vibe book with the funniest (and very realistic) friendship ! I think it lacked diversity, it’s something I look forward to the most in books but there was very little of it here.

The characters were so funny & Remy’s mom reminded me of Evelyn Hugo from TSHOEH LMAO

Super cute, Sarah Dessen definitely has a way with words with teenagers like me ! 4/5 !

Buku pertama Sarah Dessen yg aku coba baca. YA realistic yg mirip dgn cara Rainbow Rowell ataupun Mellina Marchetta bercerita, ttg seorang remaja yg mencari jati diri. Sebenarnya aku lebih suka YA realistic ringan spt ini. Maksudku siapa sih di usia 18 thn yg mencari happily ever after???
Seluruh standar Remy ttg cowok kacau sejak bertemu Dexter. Selama ini Remy gonta ganti pacar dgn pola yg sama, hanya bertahan singkat kemudian mengulang lagi siklusnya. Tipe cowoknya pun sama, sesuai standar Remy. Namun Dexter adlh penyimpangan, namun justru dgn Dexter lah Remy mulai merasakan sesuatu yg gk pernah dia rasakan thd cowok2nya terdahulu.

4.5 stars but I'm rounding up.

On a Sarah Dessen reread streak! Can you tell?

This Lullaby holds up after so many years, and is still my favorite YA contemporary work. I used to reread this so much back in late middle school through high school. I loved getting to reconnect with my favorite Dessen girl Remy and Dexter (who was one of my first book bfs). Plus, I never really like leaving this world behind - the nostalgia is so real with this book! Maybe I'll make a habit of rereading this every once in a while again.

Knocking off half a star for the one-time use of the "g" slur and that conversation about the painting that can come off as fatphobic. Hopefully future reprints will rectify those issues.

I have heard from a lot of people who love Sarah Dessen's books so I thought I'd give one a try. I am not part of the target audience for these books so I can't say I loved it, but I can see why teens would love it.

Iconic Sarah Dessen including all the good (early 2000s nostalgia), the bad  (absolutely unreal depiction of High School), and the ugly (insanely problematic romantic trope of guy “wears down” (read: stalks) a girl until she gives in and dates him). Big shout out to my K for bringing this lil YA treat back into my life! Love a youthful re-read

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'll have to come back to this review...

Sweet story about balancing family, friends and future plans. Although Sarah Dessen is a young adult writer, her way with words makes it hard to put her books down. A must read for those looking for something short and sweet.

I'm pretty sure GR has erased my old review. Back when I was 18, I thought Remy was boring and Dexter a creep.

I mean. I think I was smarter back then (but way more depressed, and not as wise).

This book has a soft spot in my heart. I still remember when I picked it up at 12 from the library, reading it in the car while it rained outside and my mom went to pick up some groceries. This was my introduction to romance. And now, in retrospective, it has influenced my writing style and even the way I think.

Remy was GREAT. I'm sorry, Lucía at 18, but she really had to be her own mom most of the time, and she relied mostly on herself, and I don't think we really talk about how tiring and time-consuming that is. I really liked how her insecurities were depicted while not being blatantly obvious. I liked her relationship with her friends and family, how it's showed that sometimes love isn't a smooth path, even if it's platonic. And I really liked how she was around Dexter, how she felt somewhat softer.

Now, Dexter was still a creep, but it's a book. And he was funny. And soft. And understanding. (And written by a woman *sighs*). It surprised me because I remembered him more immature, but he still had a surprising emotional intelligence that helped smooth his relationship with Remy, making it a safe space for both of them.

I don't know. This book is ridiculous. But I really love it.
