The overall plot was okay and the author really, really needs both a developmental editor and a copy editor. There were a lot of errors with missing words and the wrong words that kept jolting me out of the story. Then the first almost 45% of the book could have been condensed to only about 20%. Really nothing new happened for that first 45% that hadn't already been happening/we knew was going to happen. Their writing could be so much improved if they got a bit of extra help in these couple of aspects of their writing.

Very cute with characters that are interesting and make you wanna learn more. It ends in a way that feels too swift so it leaves you starting the next book immediately. I would give this a 4 star review IF there was less redundancy in the characters thoughts and internal monologue and a few more events or variety of events. However I have nothing bad to say about it and I do like it. And am reading the whole series.

Not the right book for me in this moment. I’ll come back to it at a later date!

Favorite quotes (MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS):

To the sacrifices we make for the ones we love.

That I finally grasped just how much strength it would take to stay soft in a world hell-bent on breaking you.

“I got in a fight, that’s all. Nothing new.” “But who would do this to you?” “Look, I wasn’t lying when I said I did this to me,” Cyprian answers. “I picked the fight. I wanted to fight. I wanted to feel pain.”

“Because,” he starts, “because I deserve as much. I deserve to feel what my family has put you through. What I haven’t been man enough to protect you from.”

“Touch her,” Cyprian says, the words low and threatening, “and it’ll be the last thing you do.”

*sigh*
Yes the rating says 5 stars, but being honest, only the last half of the book is 5 stars.

The first half is probably 2.5 stars. The first half was Cinderella themed with the wicked step mother and step (brothers). *they gave me the massive ICK vibe*
I normally don't read the other reviews because I like to gather my own thoughts and opinions, but I agree with most of the lower ones. I don't DNF books, so I had to press on.

The last half was better written and allowed the reader to actually get into the book and begin to enjoy the characters. As noted in the authors note, this is a cliff hanger so you have been warned.
Due to the quality of the last half, I will be attempting to read the next books in the Tempting the Fates Book Series.

This book was so sad and beautiful! This was short, fast-paced, and felt like Greek Gods, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella had a baby.

Felt like a retelling mix of Cinderella (but with stepbrothers), Beauty and the beast, and Hades and Persephone.
Was a good read.

This was a quick and easy read. I appreciated the slower burn of the romance, even though I still think the two main characters fell in love with each other a bit too quickly. Sometimes stories rely on tropes to get their reader buy-in, and I would say that's the case with this book. That said, I did genuinely enjoy myself and the characters, and I'd recommend the book to others who enjoy this genre and/or these tropes. It's been a while since I started a book and couldn't put it down, and this one qualified!

I’m rating this book a generous 3/5.

❗️SPOILERS❗️

My biggest problem with this novel was the pacing. For the first half of the book we see everything through Hazel’s perspective. I think readers could have easily learned about Hazel’s abuse in one or two chapters. Her creepy step brother, Amadeus, who tried to rape her maybe 4 times. Then her other step brother, Cyprian, who is an alcoholic and is suddenly protective of her.

I didn’t buy into Cyprian’s redemption. He spent years as a bystander and suddenly he wants to protect Hazel and says he loves her. I’m sure there’s more to his story, but it felt odd to me. There is about 250 pages in this book and 100 were spent with Hazel being hurt by her step mother and Cyprian trying to be a hero.

Death and Hazel’s time together was very short. I wish the author had spent more time building this relationship. Maybe more time with the world building. I rate my ability to immerse into their world a 2/5.

I did enjoy Death’s perspective. It gave some insight to how easily it was for him to care for Hazel. He was kind to her which isn’t something she is used to. I just wish there were more conversations between them. There was no spice in this book. Death and Hazel share one kiss that ultimately kills her. Their chemistry was 3.5/5.

The second half of the book was more descriptive than the first half. I did feel the pain Death and Hazel carried knowing he would have to kill her after one month. There were some loose ends I’m sure will be explained in the upcoming book.
