This book just blew my mind away. It's probably the most disturbing book I've ever read--but I mean that in a positive way, if that makes sense; the controversial issues discussed in the book made me think about the possibilities of the present and the future. Everything was set up and explained perfectly, and the plot was fast and intriguing. I loved the development and realism of the characters, especially Amy, Elder, and Harvey. The mystery interwoven with the science-fiction simply made Across the Universe all the more impossible to put down.

I reeeeally liked this one. I'm only not giving it a 5 star because I think the red herrings could have been more convincing and it annoys me that everything has to be a trilogy. This was perfect as a standalone!

I didn't give this book as many stars as it probably deserved, but that was mainly because I GUESSED WHO THE KILLER WAS FROM LIKE THE FIRST PAGE. I hate mystery and sic-fi. I really do, but I took a chance because of the BEAUTIFUL cover (that took everyone a few minutes to figure out) and I really liked it. I did. Despite that, I must say that it was boring at times and a struggle to get into. The Season thing (everyone "breeds" at the same time to make generations all the same age) was disgustingly horrifying. EWWW. Plus, there was like ZERO romance. I kept waiting for it and waiting for it, but it NEVER CAME. NOT EVEN AT THE END. When I finally finished it, I was not satisfied. I literally threw the book across the room and took a deep breath of, thankfully, fresh air. The book was, overall, interesting and thought provoking, but I didn't love it. At all. Recommended for sci-fi, romance-is-boring-but-science-is-fun people.

This book was fantastic. I decided to read it because of all the hype that was surrounding it about how amazing it was. Now I get it. The characters were deep and all their actions, everything they said could be explained by something that happened to them in the past. This book was laden with detail on not only the past and present, but the future outlook as well. The plot was suspenseful and had me flipping the pages untill late at night. I got the book a few weeks ago but after reading the first couple chapters I stopped. I picked it back up again recently and it finally dove into the plot when Amy woke up. I couldn't put it down. It was great
As for the characters, Amy was a refreshing heroine. Most main girl characters are either the damsel-in-distress type or the i'm-gonna-act-strong-but-i'm-really-gonna-go-home-and-cry type. I don't mind either of those while reading but their a bit over-used. Amy, on the other hand, is a completely new species of heroine. She's gonna through a lot of strife and when she really does look like she's about to fall apart, even though she's so strong, she doesn't cry- she get's angry. She yells, she screams, she throws things. It sometimes gets to the point where the Doctor on the ship has to threaten her with tranquilizer meds. If you think, that's getting a bit extreme, read the book and see how you would feel in her situation. I think I'd need the meds, too. Her reactions are believable, which makes her such a great character. Aside, from one or two parts where she annoyed me, she was great and joy to read about. The same goes for Elder. His fight against Eldest and the mystery killer is a great one to watch, but his internal battle with himself is even greater. You watch him go back and forth between his Elder-'leader' self who believes all thay Eldest has taught him and his Elder-'individual' self who not only believes what Eldest is doing is wrong and wants to stop him but is also hearing the real truth about Sol-Earth from Amy. Lastly, Harley. Harley is an amazing character, even if he was a supporting one. Being the only real constant friend of Elder and Amy, he is in a lot of the book. So at first, you don't realize his slowly-growing obssession start to form. I won't say anymore because I don't want to ruina nything (more than I already have) but I'll just say that his story is heart-breaking and touches the heart. I think that he might actually be my favorite character.
Anyway, bravo Beth Revis for creating a stunning book and weaving a great story(mystery and romance included). Across the Universe is probably one of the most well-written books I've read in a long time. I reccomend it to everyone, young, old and in the middle alike. It really is a phenomenal novel.

It is a very slow burn and I thought about not finishing but once it got to the murder plot thickening I got into it and couldn’t put it down. I wasn’t going to continue the series but I will.

3.75 stars

The plot line in Across the Universe is creative and interesting. Spaceships that just aren't quite right when someone from the outside comes into it. It's slow in the beginning, but once it picks up it's hard to put the book down.

One thing that bugged me was the language. There are words in the story that are to replace swears, but this is an young adult book and the amount of swears (even if they weren't actual swears) was too much. It took away from the story and really wasn't necessary at all.

The love story was also hard to latch onto. For Elder, Amy was different and his age. Of course he would form some kind of attraction to her, and Amy was alone on Godspeed so she needed someone for comfort. It felt kind of forced like they just had to get together. I thought the pair were at least better off as friends.

Overall Across the Universe is a good read.
