The first book I've read in a while that I could not put down. Definitely YA but a great sci-fi mystery with likable characters.
Disappointing. This book could have been genius and even begins that way. The book is well-written, the characters evoke emotional responses, the premise is even inventive for dystopian fiction. The black & white are a little too black & white, the grays nearly nonexistent and the need for this to be the beginning of the series rather than a standalone book harms the book.
I wanted to love this book, (and it's probably a 3.5 but I can only do whole numbers), but I just didn't.
I do think you'll like Amy and Harley and Elder if you bring them home, though.

Chytrá, slušně napsaná kniha, která umně využívá spousty možností, který nabízí zvolený téma i prostředí, a (zvlášť u Amy) jazykově šikovně balancuje mezi čtivostí a funkčním ohejbáním směrem k afektovanosti. Důsledný střídání vypravěče sice není nic novýho ani objevnýho, ale zrovna tady moc hezky funguje, navíc ho autorka hezky využívá ke zrychlování děje. Sympaticky implicitní úvahy postav, zajímavě, neprvoplánově načrtnutý vztahy. Moc příjemný čtení i překládání, těším se na další díl.
1st of June: Strike that, I read 5 books in May... I'm beginning to think that I read faster than I thought...
31st of May 2014: This has been an amazing reading month. 4 books! That's a record! Now, I'll sleep.

This book was a colossal waste of my time, I started intrigued with the whole freezing process and then suddenly we spend half the book trapped in a girl's frozen mind and also in the mind of some random kid.
The love story was instantaneous and I was confused about the race of people and what was happening and I was halfway through and we hadn't even gotten to the solving the murder part. It was just bad, I just didn't like it, like at all.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. It was captivating! I fell in love with Amy, Elder, and Harley the moment I read about them. But the plot was also predictable. I saw the drugged humans, genetic modification, never-actually was a plague aspects of the story coming from a mile away. I also knew Elder had thawed Amy about halfway through the book. The Eldest/Elder cloning was a huge surprise. However, it was pretty obvious that Orion was the previous Elder almost as soon as he was introduced as a character. The writing was good, but nothing extraordinary. The alternating points of view definitely added to the overall story, but the timing was off in places, making some of the story line difficult to immediately follow. Ultimately, it is definitely a read once and forget about type of book. I would recommend this book as a quick read or as an in-between for your need to read books, but it is not a necessity and I would never sacrifice room on my bookshelf for it.
The book was a very fast read, and possibly a good entry-level dystopia for a young adult.
This series was suggested to me, and I decided that it sounded great. I took Across the Universe with me on vacation and devoured it. It was nice and refreshing. I’m not usually big into the space scene (unless it’s Star Wars), but this was definitely nice for something different. Sometimes as a stay at home mom, I feel like Amy felt on Godspeed. There are times that I feel trapped and isolated behind walls. It really felt that way this past week after a straight week of rain with a whiny toddler who is missing his daddy. I can’t imagine being stuck in space. At least when I feel trapped here, I can step out in the rain for a few seconds just to catch a breath of fresh air.
As a parent, I can’t imagine having to face the choice Amy’s parents did. They were so ready to go to the new planet, but didn’t fully realise (at least it felt that way to me) what they were asking teenage Amy to give up. She’s a high schooler, she doesn’t know what’s out there for her. I know I wouldn’t want to be separated from my children, but I would want to help decide what is best for them. Even though the prospect seems horrible, I believe I wouldn’t put my children in a situation to have to choose between me and the world they’d be leaving behind. Hopefully, I will never be in that situation.
It seemed so strange in reading that the people of Godspeed didn’t seem to be that advanced. You would think three hundred years in the future, the intelligence level would be higher, not lower. Yes, the technology has advanced, but the people are no where remotely more advanced. the discovery of why they behave the way they do is incredible. A drug that keeps them docile and submissive. It also intrigued me how they were all monoethnic and zero diversity. I was excited to read through the series to see if the reason behind this would be explained.
When I started A Million Suns, I got distracted with the Matched series and ended up not reading for a while. I reread the part I had read and it quickly went by to the end. I was advised to have Shades of Earth on hand for when I finished. I’m very glad I heeded this advice.
The discovery that they were already at their destination was a HUGE surprise. I had an inkling that was where things were going, but I wasn’t expecting it. I was very excited to see how Revis would display this new world. I was pleased and displeased with it. I was hoping for something vastly different from Earth. Pink grass or something like that would’ve been a nice throw in.
It was great getting to meet the “Frozens,” but I was a bit disappointed with the portrayal of Amy’s father. He was the stereotypical soldier. As a military wife, I know that not all military personnel are like this. I feel if he’d been a bit more personable, his actions would’ve made more sense. But that’s just me as a military wife. Amy’s mother seemed a bit blase too. Just their personalities made them seem like an odd fit and strange that they had a child. They both appeared much too attached to their professions to have wanted a family. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be the type that was career hell or high water before a family. My priorities changed. I just seems to me that people with this personality set usually don’t have kids. They do appear like a close family in a way. I dunno. the family dynamic just felt off to me a bit.
Not wanting to spoil the ending (I want you to read it for yourself!), that plot twist was HUGE. It blew my mind and was fantastically done. I was hoping things would be explained and it was laid out just like I was hoping. I’m sad I came into the series after it was finished, but the cliffhanger between two and three, I don’t think I would’ve been able to handle a year wait! I will definitely read this again!

Wow, I hate this so much. I thought I can suffer through, but after their first kiss I can't anymore. Eww.
Where do I start? I actually thought I will love this because I'm in a sci-fi mood lately and I love cryosleep. And I was mildly interested in the mystery plot,
BUT
The characters have no personality. It is about a boy, who is trained to be the leader, but somehow ends up being a horny rebel after seeing this girl for the first time. Because this girl is so different than everyone else on the ship. She has white skin.
Everyone has darker skin and hair because "the first cause of discord is difference", so they have to look the same and be the same in every area possible.
Then comes this white girl who is considered a "freak" (their word) because she disrupts the order and they are afraid of her and try to attack and even kill her for it. She brings up Hitler. It just felt icky to me, but I haven't seen anyone complain about this, so maybe I'm overreacting.
Another review also mentioned some drugs that make them emotionless, but don't quote me on that because either the information passed me or I haven't gotten to that part yet.
The people don't get education, but how do they want to build a new civilization on a new planet without professionals? The hundred cryosleeping people and the few working in the labs won't be enough for that.
And the romance? The what? It's another case of you are a boy and I am a girl so we should be together even though we spoke two words so far and have zero chemistry and nothing in common. One moment the girl thinks about the boyfriend she left behind on Earth, the other she kisses the mc. The boy thinks [about another character's art box]: "I have no idea why she needs them. I just know that I'd face another Plague to get them for her if I had to." but they have known each other for a day at that point.
Give me a gun.
