I’m enjoying this series. I hadn’t realized they were all by different authors, and I don’t think I liked this authors writing style as much as I do Sloane St. James’ (author of book 1), but that was a minor thing. This was still a great addition to the series.
SYNOPSIS:
Once upon a time, Rowan and Violette were beginning to fall for each other. Still in high school, they were partnered together for a science project, and also Rowan was Vi’s brothers best friend. Fate, right? When Jacob got caught up in trouble, Rowan was manipulated into dumping Violette and it crushed her already slim self esteem. She left town as soon as she could after finishing school so she wouldn’t have to see Rowan around her brother at all. Ten years pass, and Violette has now moved back to Sky Ridge. Her twin, Jacob, passed away years ago in a firefighting incident, and that’s contributed to her ten years away from home. But now divorced, she returns home with her daughter to be close to her parents. She runs into Rowan one night while bartending, and he’s unaware she’s back. He vows to himself to do everything he can to explain to her what happened in high school and win her back. He’s never gotten over her. She says she’s never gotten over him, but that’s just her anger and bitterness from that time talking. He was her first love. As time passed, he wears her down and she agrees to go out with him. He’s hurt in the same type of incident that killed Jacob years ago and Vi is his nurse. The time he’s in her burn unit is when he wears her down. After spending time together, they both realize their feelings for one another never left, and are now coming back stronger than ever. She’s terrified of being played for a fool by him again, but he explains to her what happened in high school and promises her that she is all he wants. And it helps that he adores her daughter too. In the end, they end up getting married, and Violette says it was fate after all, and a little bit of spiritual guidance from Jacob on the other side.
SYNOPSIS:
This book was much better than the last one in my opinion. Love a good old flame comes back together. The smut was quite smutty. The timeline felt reasonable. The child had an amazing personality, fun read

While it may appear that my rating for Protect is the same as my review for Fight you will actually see that the ratings are different. I would give this book between a 3.25 and 3.5 rating. This is the first book I am reading from Paisley Hope, but I do have more books on my TBR from her, and I am curious to pick those up in the not-too-distant future. I want to see how her books and her writing style vary when a storyline is 100% her own compared to a collaboration effort with other writers.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and it is one of my favorite plots. A second-chance romance, mixed with childhood friendship to lovers. Yes, please. Sign me up and I will devour that so fast...
Overall, I liked the story of Rowan Kingsly, his backstory, and his trauma. Violette wasn't bad either and I really enjoyed the relationship she has with her parents and daughter. Her trauma, or better said, her pain with losing her brother is obviously mentioned, but I don't think it was explored well. Violette and Jacob were twins. We are told over and over the pain that Violette felt at losing her other half and the connection they have as twins, even after death, but I wish we had gotten more insight into their childhood and bond to really understand her pain.
Also, Rowan and Jacob had been friends since childhood. I understand that Violette and Rowan maybe didn't spend a lot of one-on-one time together when they were young, but they obviously knew each other well before their "relationship" during their senior year of high school. Those flashbacks or memories would have contributed to the connection we feel as readers to the betrayal and humiliation that Violette felt.
Again, it was nothing major. I just wish we were given more—more of a story to help me connect with the characters now and really understand them. There were also a few minor, teeny inconsistencies or comments that bothered me because they simply took me out of the story for moments. An example is Hollie. We start off by hearing that she is four years old. Then she is three and a half years old, then she is closer to three years old. It's not an important detail. We understand that she is a small child, but if you are going to give her an age, don't change it later on in the book because those small details stand out and have me dwelling on them and take me out of the story. it shouldn't take me out of the story because it's a detail that has no real relevance.

I will never not pick up a Paisley book and this did not disappoint! I was told by multiple people that this would probably be my favourite of the trilogy, and I fear they may be correct. I demolished this book so fast, I literally only put it down to eat and sleep.
This story follows Rowan Kingsley, a hotshot firefighter who has a rocky past, breaking his late best friends sister, Violette’s heart at 18. So when Vi shows up in their home town after years of being away, as a newly single mum, working in the burn unit at the hospital, King knows he needs to try and make it up to her. So when an accident leaves him ending up in her burn unit, he takes his shot at trying to reconnect with her, even though she is doing her best to stay as far away as she can, away from anything that reminds her of her past. But second chances really happen, so if there is a chance it can happen, they are going to try.
- Single Mum
- Second Chance Romance
- Hotshot Firefighter x Trauma Nurse
- Brothers Best Friend
- Golden Retriever MMC
- Trauma and Grief reps
Rowan Kingsley… A new top MMC to add to my list! When Paisley wrote “what a fuckable man” I agreed whole heartedly to that line. This man is everything you want: hot, funny, caring, kind, good in bed, passionate, knows how to handle his feelings, the list literally goes on. The way he felt about the girls was just, uhhh I can’t even explain the happiness I felt reading about it. His moment with Hollie actually made my heart burst, his love for that little girl goes the same for her momma!
And let’s not forget Violette! My girl, she is so strong, powerful, beautiful and such an amazing mum! She is definitely a top FMC for me. Her relationship with not only Rowan, but Hollie through the book was just unmatched and so dang sweet. I totally understood her grief and reluctance thought out the book and I think that just made the wait all the more worth it!
Both characters had to deal with their own grief and this was so emotional throughout the story. I cried at how real the emotions Paisley bought to the page were.
I’m obsessed with backstory flashbacks and this book had the best ones I’ve seen in a damn while! It just brings so much more story and emotion to the book!
I didn’t want this book to end, I was hooked and couldn’t get enough. If I could rate this book 100000 stars I would. This whole series so far has been my favourite and I feel it will be hard to beat this year! Please if you haven’t already, take this a sign to read this series!

Okay, I did enjoy this more than Cal and Scottie's story - Rowan and Vi are great, loved their communication between each other as well, the flashbacks were a joy to read and the book really felt like these two had known each other for 10 years, they're so layered in their characters so it was lovely to read about their romance and their second chance.
HOWEVER. The jealous ex trope is prevalent throughout, in both flashback with Kyleigh, and present day with Troy. It SUCKS to read about aaaaaaaand it annoys me greatly when this trope is used so if it annoys anyone else, not this book.
Now onto book 3! Xander and Teddy's story, which I have high hopes for with how they've been in the background the past two books.
