Good idea - but for a short story, not a 300-page long book.
Shame about the main character. There's so much wrong about her, starting from her lack of journalistic curiosity which contradicts her profession, and finishing with a funny tendency to take relaxing baths and pop sleeping pills like candy when the world's gone to shit.

Resourceful and strong female lead. Weird manifestation of alien invasion, but definitely interesting. Look forward to next installment.

Things get better in the second book, but this one was not ready for publication. I was definitely feeling very generous in the giving out of stars because my expectations were not that high, but I don't really think this author is a writer. It's the excruciating detail; the awkward sentences; the things he gets wrong (women's jackets generally don't have inside pockets); the extraordinary good luck of the heroine that is a huge challenge for the reader to accept; the rampant clichés and hackneyed sentences. This book needed a good editor, or at the very least, needed to be workshopped before released to the pubic.

Just because you have a good story to tell doesn't mean that you know how to tell that story.

But it was cheap enough and, like I said, the second book made some necessary corrections. And the story is decent. So if bad writing doesn't make you twitch too much, you might enjoy it.

Ok. This book kept me interested and wondering what was going to happen next. But.....I’m from Iowa. Within 30 min of Denison. And never have I ever met somebody around here who couldn’t drive. Even just a little. (Disabled excluded). Don’t tell me Emily couldn’t have at least TRIED to drive. There’s nobody else on the roads! No rules or laws. Gas on the right, break on the left. Not hard. Think of all the supplies you could fit in a vehicle! Plus, a speedy get away just in case. Packing all the bike supplies is ridiculous.

This was a really interesting book. I totally thought it was going to be completely different but that's not a bad thing. I'm glad it wasn't a typical alien invasion book. I did start to get a little bored every time Emily was on her own for too long and hadn't talked to anyone for a while. I really enjoyed all the description aside from all the directions. I've never been to New York so the street names and directions meant nothing to me and got a little bit excessive. I thought the book ended in a good spot. I did have some issues with Emily's character. She would flip-flop between being this strong female character to just basically giving up and hoping she went fast. She also did some really stupid things that caused some injuries that could have been avoided. I did mostly like her, though. I will definitely be readying Exodus.

This was so dull; poorly written with no real plot other than a vaguely interesting concept that's been done a hundred times before. And it ended randomly after several chapters of not very much happening apart from a long winded description of the irritating MC packing a bag and doing stupid shit.

I would rather poke my eyes out than read the 3 sequels.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
4 stars — Oh dear…that was totally out of my normal realm of reading…. Very well written, great descriptions…I actually felt like I was there, and frankly I was terrified. Honestly, the only reason it didn’t get to more stars was my own personal taste….I tend to get really into books, and that’s not so good in a disturbing world like this. And I totally didn’t know this was going to be a series, so now I have to wait patiently and then read even more in a world where I’m not exactly comfortable, but I’m gripped anyways… Plus, Thor just put the final nail in that coffin. Well done Paul Jones. Well done.

ON REREAD:
3.5 stars — I still only have the old indie version, not the rereleased by 47North version, so that’s what I reread. Not sure what changed when it was republished. I’m hoping they cleaned up a lot of the editing mistakes, and the UKisms that were sprinkled throughout (tinned vs canned, Bergen, some weird word for tarmac/pavement).

I still don’t read basically *any* horror, so for me this was still very atmospheric and frightening…but I’m a super chicken, so take that into account.

I sometimes found that Emily’s reactions were unreasonable, but then it felt more like it was delayed or compartmentalizing, and then that actually felt pretty realistic. It’s really hard reading a book with basically 1 character — I’m used to enjoying secondary characters.

But then again, there was Thor. I forgot how late he comes in. I love him. I need more of him.

So yeah…definitely curious to see what comes in the next book, but I’m also kind of afraid. Definitely not a book I can read in a house all alone, or at night all alone.

Don't bother. I bought this because the Kindle sample seemed well written and interesting. And it is. But once you get past the first 5 chapters, it's no longer worth reading. Dumb main character who is a total Mary Sue. Weird, random, lame story. Blech.

Really enjoyed this book, especially the main character. It was both terrifying and engrossing, in a balanced. well written way. Already reading book 2, and bought the whole series now. Sad that Book 5 will not be an Audiobook but Kindle version for it is available.

Entertaining and distracting, but not exactly a great read.
