4.5 ⭐️

It was a fun adventure to read with my 5 & 3 year old boys. There were many words none of us knew (sea creatures, types of birds, etc) that we enjoyed looking up and finding pictures of, like a “mermaid’s purse”.

My boys were a bit too young to understand some of the scenes as they were written. I had to pause sometimes and explain what was happening, with the vocabulary being a bit more advanced than they are used to. The storyline itself was just wonderful for a wide age range of children though. I can’t pick anything out that I found unsuitable for even my 3 year old.

My 5 year old really enjoyed it the most and he’s excited to watch the movie next. He’s definitely a fan of Crusoe, the Water Horse who was born splashing happily around in a bathtub surrounded by his “giant” friends.

Very sweet low stakes story that the boys loved despite my butchering of Scottish accents.

This is my nostalgic feel-good book, always helps me to get out of a reading slump

This is a quick read and very different from the movie. If you like uncomplicated stories about old-timey children having low-stakes adventures, put this in the basket where you keep Dick King-Smith’s “Babe,” Forester’s “Poo-Poo and the Dragons,” and the My Father’s Dragon books.

We really liked The Water Horse. We're definitely Dick King-Smith fans, and we're on a Loch Ness Monster kick lately, so this was a good fit. The brother and sister and grandpa are great characters. The dialogue is funny. Though he does anthropomorphize animal characters, and the Water Horse is no exception, the relationship of the kids and the beast is quite realistic and seems healthy rather than heartbreaking. There were no tears shed at the end--its a happy one. Good family read.

(Tää on nyt kolmas (putkeen) yhdessä luettu kirja, jolle lapsi ois antanut noin ”tuhat!” tai ”miljoona tähteä!!”, mut pidätän oikeuden pyöristää vähän alaspäin oman fiilikseni mukaan

My six year old son and I read this aloud together and what an amazing story! The characters are lovable and the story moves quickly. It's an enchanting tale about how the Loch Ness Monster, named Crusoe, came to find a home, a story about love and taking care of each other. It's a lesson for young children that even if you love something there are times you must let it go because it is what is best for them.
It is a wonderful family book to read together.
