Great book when it's talking about the behavioral stuff. Super useful. I would have liked more on that, specifically. Guess I'll have to listen to his podcasts!

The into and first chapters just talk about the fact that it works, see, look! Proof and charts. You can skim them.

If you don't suffer from suicidal thoughts, you can skim that chapter.

And if you're not thinking about taking meds, you can skip the last couple chapters.

The book does a great job at systematically approaching cognitive distortions. While I disagree that negative thinking alone is the cause of all depression, I do believe it plays a large role. This book I think can be helpful if you experience mild to somewhat moderate depression. While the book tackles severe depression and even s**cidal ideation, I don't think I could have digested this book in throes of my deepest depression. It does come off self help-y at times but I have found the mood logs and daily cognitive distortion work helpful.

Full disclosure, only made it about 1/4 of the way through before I decided this author wasn't for me. I think most of that is because it feels incredibly dated. Many of the stories he tells about patients have an incredibly sexist feel to them. The first couple of chapters about negative thoughts had some good insights, but eventually I got a little bogged down with the tone and decided there are better books out there that deal with the same subject matter so I didn't have to keep trying.

Cognitive therapy, meditative practices, & drug therapy have all come a long way in helping people feel good. To those who claim their goal is to enjoy life, I highly recommend this book! This is from an author that has done the research, understands the statistics, knows how to learn from his mistakes, is honest in his sharing, and has deliberately practiced his craft for decades.

Enjoy & let me know how this has changed your life! :)
