I didn't love this. It appreciate the twistiness of the plot, but the ideas felt stale, perhaps because much speculative fiction ink has been spilled by brilliant minds on the topic of war and the cheapness of soldiers. I did enjoy the scenes during which Kovacs and his team explore the Mars spaceship, but that was the highlight for me. It might be Richard K. Morgan's writing, but I never connect with his characters. I think that it's difficult for him to walk the line of detachment to illustrate the absurdity of war and the norm of disconnectedness when people have "sleeves" instead of bodies, and creating characters with whom the reader empathizes.

"The difference between virtuality and life is very simple.
In a construct you know that everything is being run by an all-powerful machine.
Reality doesn't offer this assurance, so it's very easy to develop the mistaken
impression that you're in control."

She said, "I have no excuses, least of all for God.
Like all tyrants, he is not worthy of the spit you
would waste on negotiations. The deal we have is infinitely
simpler - I don't call him to account, and he extends
me the same courtesy."

Not a bad read, but not as entertaining as the first in the series. Still a fun diversion.

Bigger and better than Altered Carbon

In the end a very different book than Altered Carbon was. I think I actually like it better. And it opens up a bigger, more interesting universe. Hopefully #3 plays more with it.

This series is just not for me. I didn't have fond memories of the first book, but i did enjoy the TV series, so i thought i would give the second book a chance.
Maybe it is the style of the writing, but i do not connect with the author with his writing here. It could also be the narrator, who is fairly monotone, but i did get confused with where the plot was going a couple of times during the story.
The plot itself was ok, but not as good as the first book. Still lots of sex and gore.
Think i will pass on the series, and hope the TV series continues.

Season 2 of the Netflix show deviated completely from this book. The only similarities are the appearance and abilities of Kovacs new sleeve, and the existence of a military character names Carrera. The actual plot is totally different, and I can only describe it as Stargate if everyone is slowly dying of radiation poisoning, and then a hard turn into X Files with the danger of real death. Still the same graphic sex and violence, and no one trusting anyone.

Other themes that come up are the ethics of the military industrial complex, and whether borrowing tech that you didnt develop is really a good idea.
