idk how to say it other than: this is exactly my kind of weird scifi.

this is kind of promoted like a companion series like the becky chambers books..where you can read them in whatever order but the crossover characters might not make sense. but i'm not sure about that for this one. i didn't know it was third in a "companion" series when i got it, and after finishing it and looking at the character list in the back for the whole series MEH it def would've been better in order. sometimes events or people were referenced, and i think it would've made more sense in order. fortunately, i really liked this!! so i fully plan to get the first two books and reread this one with more context.

This was fascinating and unexpected. Since I picked this up due to it being longlisted by the 2024 Women's Prize for Fiction, I didn't realize that it was actually third in a series. I had read that it could read as a standalone and I decided to give it a try.

The concepts of this book are so different from things I've previously read and I'm intrigued. I do think while I didn't need the other two books to follow the story, I think I was missing a lot of the depth that I could tell was there but I couldn't fully appreciate. I will definitely be picking up the other two books at some point and then rereading this again. I couldn't fully tell if this was the last book of a trilogy or if there is more to come. I feel like there is so much of this world left to explore so I'm excited to delve deeper.

I was looking forward to reading this book from the longlist as it's not my usual genre (science fiction) and I was excited to read something different. It didn't dissapoint. I was intranced by the writing style, so descriptive and easy to visualise from the start. I loved how it delved straight into the plot, and was so fast paced. Although a lot of characters and concepts get introduced I was reassured that the author was taking us on a fantastical journey.
At times, I felt a bit lost at the complexity of the storylines and the amount of detail of the planet names and races, but I just went with it and it didn't deter my enjoyment overall.
Slightly jarred that it's book 3 of a series, and havnt read any of the others, but still was a good read.
Really refreshing writing and will definetly read from this author again.

Picked this one up after it was longlisted for the women's prize and was not enjoying it at all, even though the premise was interesting and the writing itself was great, I just felt very disconnected from the book as a whole. Then found out it's the third book in a series???? So no wonder i felt this way, and seems to be the case for loads of other people who've given it a go. I might try out the first book in the series some other time and get back round to this eventually bc it does have some cool concepts and I've enjoyed Karen Lord's work before.
