Noelle and Morgan’s story has been building through all the others in the series. I was really looking forward to finally getting to see them as the main focus. Unfortunately this one was a big miss for me.

I felt like N and M’s story was still secondary - even in their own book. This time to the discovery of Morgan’s daughter. It might have partly been the audio narration but I found her pretty annoying.

Parts of this book felt so repetitive that I actually wondered if I had accidentally rewound and was hearing the same thing again.

This could have (should have) been an intense pageturner and instead it was a big snooze - I ended up skimming the end in case I decide to finish the rest of the series. I think for now I need to take a break. So disappointed.

I enjoyed reading Jim and Noelle's story. Lots of passion. I loved how their history was spaced out throughout the novel. Cate was a great, strong character.

Midnight Action, Killer Instincts #5, by Elle Kennedy
Grade: A

"Any hobbies?" "You mean, other than kicking ass and taking names?"

For fans of the Killer Instincts series this is THE book we've been waiting for and it was perfect! Jim and Noelle have been dancing around each other for four previous books and have gone back and forth between loving and hating each other. There were times I thought these two would kill each other before they actually got together or Noelle and D might get together so I was very pleasantly surprised when these two finally got their book. I was worried that my expectations were too high but I was pleasantly surprised with the way things turn out.

We get flashbacks from nineteen years earlier when Jim and Noelle first met, how their relationship evolved and how they ended up hating each other. I loved the flashbacks and trying to piece together what happend, what went wrong and where things could go between these two. Things are nothing what they seem and there are twists and turns one every page that kept me glued to my kindle until the early morning. I could not and would not have put this books down for anything (including a good night sleep).

This series is a wild roller coaster of adventure and Midnight Action is the best book so far. I feel that each story gets more complex and more emotional to the point I need a Xanax before I start reading. If you love action romance books this is the series for you so sit back and enjoy one heck of a ride.

Oh man. This has been the biggest build up to a book ever. We’ve seen the interaction (hostile) between Jim and Noelle since the very first book. We know that something irreparable happened between them to make them detest each other. And, unfortunately for them, they’ve had to be in each other’s presence a lot over the last four books. The wait, oh boy, was so worth it.

Noelle is the leader of her assassin team. She’s a cold-hearted b***h that can kill a man in her sleep (I wouldn’t doubt that she has…), with both hands tied behind her back. She doesn’t care about anyone but her girls, and she causes pure shivers down your spine. The guys on Morgan’s team are all scared of her, even if she is the most gorgeous woman on the planet. The only person who seems to get under her skin is Jim Morgan. And the travel back to when they met, seeing Noelle when she was “normal,” made me love her. She’s been hurt, betrayed, and lied to. With the way she grew up? I’m quite honestly not even surprised she turned into the woman she is. She hasn’t had it easy. And she’s been carrying that around for almost two decades. We’ve always seen Noelle to be this untouchable, un-feeling woman, but we finally see that she is human.

“Prayed if they ever slept together again, that feeling of completion would have vanished. But they still fit together so goddamn perfectly and it make her want to scream. It brought the sting of tears to her eyes, the crushing, hopeless realization that she might never be free of this man.”

Jim Morgan…the mighty Morgan. The leader of the mercenary team, the badass professional. He’s always been the cool, confident leader, but in this book we really delve into him. We see that he has faults, he has mistakes, and he has secrets. And someone has put a hit on him, someone that will take him back in time to when he first started out. He’ll have to work with Noelle to figure it out, and he’ll have to take credit for what went wrong in the past. Because this mission has everything to do with it, and somehow he and Noelle will have to persevere enough to get out of this alive.

“Swallowing, he peered down at Noelle, floored by the sheer calm reflecting back at him. ‘You okay, babe?’
She rolled her eyes. ‘Of course. What do you think I am, a pansy-ass damsel who weeps at the first sign of trouble?'”

The tension in this book was off the charts. The story, how it was woven to tell both the past and present at the same time, was flawless. The way both Jim and Noelle were so multidimensional, and how the past shaped their present was masterful. There was so much lust and hidden emotion that was hidden behind hate or distrust. For the last 40% if the book, my hands were sweating and I found my eyes trying to skip sentences or paragraphs to get further ahead. I wanted so desperately for them to find a way to heal each other because I loved who they were. I loved that even though both characters had made mistakes or suffered tragic circumstances, they were still believable and lovable people. They were still deserving of having that happily ever after.

My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2014/10/review-midnight-action-by-elle-kennedy.html

Midnight Action is flat-out spectacular. In a series filled with strong heroes and heroines, sinfully hot love scenes, and adrenaline-filled action, Elle Kennedy has outdone herself with her most compelling, emotional Killer Instincts book to date.

I admit, I almost didn’t want to start Midnight Action. After four books of Jim and Noelle’s tense-in-all-ways confrontations, I had incredibly high expectations for their story. Warily, I cracked the first page of Midnight Action… And didn’t set the book down until I finished it hours later. I should never have doubted Ms. Kennedy, for this book not only met, but blasted through all my expectations for Jim and Noelle. These two are the scariest of badasses – powerful, commanding, and yet strangely vulnerable. Their shared history has ensured that there’s no thin line between love and hate for them; both emotions furiously mix together, making their story intense from page one.

Though they’ve been major players throughout the Killer Instincts series, Queen of Assassins Noelle and ruthless mercenary Jim were an intriguing mystery to me. I loved peeling away the layers of their characters over the course of the story, and what I learned tugged at my heart. Ms. Kennedy does an impeccable job of weaving their past and present together, and I’m thrilled we got to see Jim and Noelle’s history. It’s not easy for these two to even work together, never mind fall in love. Both clearly loathe one another, yet even when presented with clear opportunities, neither one can kill the other. It takes an unusual set of circumstances (which I won’t spoil) to get them to team up. The fireworks when they do would put a Fourth of July celebration to shame. Quite simply, the pure passion Jim and Noelle have for one another is insanely hot. I was rooting for these two every step of the way, and though it’s an incredibly rocky road for them, Ms. Kennedy makes the journey worth it.

There is so much I’d love to say about Midnight Action but can’t, for I don’t want to spoil the story. Suffice it to say I’ve only touched on the surface and readers are in for one hell of a ride. Fans of the series will get to catch up with some of their favorite mercenaries, and man, oh man, am I eager to see what Ms. Kennedy has in store for Liam. That being said, don’t be afraid to dive into Midnight Action if you’ve never read a Killer Instincts book before – it can easily be read as a standalone.

Midnight Action rocks! It’s a tempest of emotions that’s impossible to put down, and it’s also a sizzling thrill ride that will feed the appetite of any romantic suspense lover. Don’t miss this book!

Jim Morgan and Noelle Phillips have had a contentious relationship since book 1. None of their operatives knew why Jim and Noelle hated each other, only that the feelings of animosity were palpable when they are in the same room.

In this book, the author gives the background to this volatile relationship by alternating past and present every other chapter. The narrator does an excellent job with so many characters because this installment had a lot of moving parts.

18 years ago, a young Jim Morgan seduced a 17 year old Noelle Phillips to gain information on Noelle's dad who was on the government wanted list for selling intelligence to the foreign enemies. The information resulted in the apprehension and death of Noelle's father. Noelle was devastated at Jim's betrayal and vowed vengeance.

In this book, Noelle receives a call from a client who wants her to murder Jim Morgan and it seems like Noelle finally got an offer she couldn't refuse. Except she told Jim and they decided to work together to uncover who wanted Jim dead.

The heat and chemistry between those two was among the highest I have ever read. They were wildly attracted to each other but there was no trust and no forgiveness for past wrong. This new assignment allowed Noelle to address her grievances and Jim to make amends. I was hoping the "D would be part of the equation, but this was a second chance romance trope and "D was a third wheel.

Allyson Ryan did an amazing job on this book. I was never lost in this audiobook. I loved the voices she used for each character because it was believable. The author didn't disappoint in Jim and Noelle's story which was my fear since the author has been alluding to it for 4 books now. I like them together and I understand why Noelle was so prickly and caustic. She had been constantly betrayed at a young age by those she trusted. She had been through a lot and survived through sheer grit and inner strength. While I hadn't liked her in prior stories, having her background made all the difference. It also allowed me to understand Jim's journey and sacrifice. The action in this book was constant and the plot was really interesting. I was entertained as the stubborn protagonists finally addressed the elephant in the room, their love. It was slightly angsty but the ending was expected. This was my favorite in this series. This book utilized many of the supporting cast we have met and it set up two new storylines. I am glad Jim and Noelle finally got over their hate and moved on to love.

GIMME ALL THE SECOND CHANCE LOVE STORIES YASSSSSSSSSSS

I'm actually reading Book 1 but Morgan and Noelle made too much of an impact on me with their obvious lust-hatred thing going on with each other I just HAD to skip and read this one first.

AND IT WAS SO GOOD how are the rest of the pairings going to top this one I don't even know

Let's be honest, the story of Jim and Noelle was never going to live up to the epic love/hate relationship that had been going on for the past four and a half books.

We all know that something happened in their past which made them hate each other (I was about to say that I thought that was a mistake - one of them should have hated the other and then done so many bad things that it turned the other and then I realised that is what happened) and become mortal enemies. But there are cracks appearing, Jim kissed Noelle and now their attraction is overpowering their desire to kill each other.

This book is told partly through flashbacks and remembering the past which makes it oddly disjointed, some key moments were held off so long it was purely for dramatic tension (you know like when one character refuses to say what is wrong for no discernible reason other than plot) and lost impact - frankly I don't think Jim's reason for hating Noelle worked because the 'reason' was held off so long that it felt unreal.

That being said, this was vintage Elle Kennedy, lots of action, billionaire arms dealers and glitzy parties. I especially liked the tension ratcheting between two other members of Jim's team and the tension in the flat when Jim and Noelle have wall-shaking sex.

Not sure I'm that keen on the next book featuring Sean, one of the info Irish twins (well that's how I think of them)
