It is really sweet to read a book meant for younger kids especially coming back to them when you are older. I used to love reading these but never got to finishing the whole series so have made it my mission to read them all finally. Some people might think that the writing style is cringey but I think that makes it a better read, seeing their friendship blossom and the adventures that they go on together. I think these are great books and are definite classics. :)

This is about the level my brain's at right now, and it was surprisingly enjoyable for a slice of nostalgia. Lashings of ginger beer, indeed :)
Read this for my Children’s Lit course, and whilst it was perhaps the correct kind of book to suit my lockdown brain, I did not greatly appreciate Blyton’s clear bias against only children.

I read this out loud to my son each night before bed. It started out pretty slow, and we are used to reading Fantasy, so we (I?) might have been slightly bored at the beginning. It picked up toward the middle and got downright exiting toward the end, so we can see how this book and the whole series are very popular, even if they are from another era. My son wants to get and read the 2nd in the series, right away.
This fresh and ingenious children's book is for me, divided into two parts. The first part gets 5 stars from me, but from the point where the children succeed, to past the climax, the book barely holds its own.
I really liked the first part. Many of the ideas were more than can be hoped in such a simple book. The children were lifelike. Their holidays's details were evocative. The Kirrin House, the island, the boat and the sea, and the people in the story were distinctive.
But when the villains made their appearance, I felt nothing. I really ought to like the climax, but the starkly real world felt like a doll's house.
I'm giving the book its due but I also cannot give the book more than it deserves. There were lots of positives to take from the story. I hope to reread this book one day and revisit the premise. For a while it made me feel like a wonderstruck person.

The three kids, Julian(12 years old), Dick(11) and Anne(10) learn they have a cousin, George(10 years old) and go to live with her for the holidays. George is initially standoffish, angry and sullen. Soon enough, they become close friends. The book follows these 4 kids and George's dog(Timothy) as they fall into an adventure. There are antagonists , treasure , dungeons and castles involved. What's not to love?
The kids are all quite different from each other and yet complement each other in the right way. My favourite character has to be Timothy( who doesn't love a dog?) He is soo sweet , doesn't hesitate to save his mistress and loves the children.
