Not as funny as the blurbs would have you believe although there were a couple of moments of hilarity. A satire of the American male of any day and age.

I didn't read a blurb or introduction. So I spent the first third wondering what the hell I was reading. In fact, I didn't realise it was meant to be read in a humorous tone until a way in - and then it was very funny. It's an absurd world of very mediocre cultists whose pinball life-paths had me reflecting on the ridiculousness of life and our attempts to make sense of it.
This book is fantastic. I love have portis does not play into any idea of american exceptionalism and instead using these average american blundering about his "hidden" knowledge of Atlantis. I felt like very little even happened in the book but it was very exciting to read. I would suggest if you want a weird american romp, the kind that is actually fun to read and not overly wrought with ideas of the american complex or whatever.
A great companion piece to this is the sadly cancelled Lodge 49. A show which focused on regular people and their quirks. Something this book does amazingly well.

There’s a reason True Grit is Portis’s best-known work. It has all the humor, absurdity and language of his other books, but it also has well-defined characters and a coherent plot. Something Masters of Atlantis lacks.
This was pretty good, I liked the part where they were growing some plant to harvest gold
Gosh I wanted to love this, but it just didn't make me actually laugh or chuckle very much at all.
this is THE MASTER if it was directed by the Coen bros, or if Ignatius O’Reilly ever tried to start his own cult. One of the funniest books I’ve ever read
If this book had taken place in California, it would have been perfect for my dissertation on alternative religion. There was something Upton Sinclair-ish about the style, and while I did not find it as uproarious as the blurbs promised, the characters and their intermittent devotion to their sect kept me interested.
And so begins the Summer of Portis, the heir apparent to Mark Twain.
